Legendary actress Irene Dunne

Well, it wasn't amazing because in the long run, her depressed and bipolar woman came off more like Carol Channing in an ultra dramatic role when compared to Marin Mazzie, her replacement, who played it like a human being, and sang it better to boot.

Not knocking Ripely or Channing. Well, at least not Carol Channing. I just wouldn't want to see her in NEXT TO NORMAL.

yankeefan7, What is that even supposed to mean? She won her Tony. She deserved it. Then Marin Mazzie went into the show and sang and acted rings around her.

jv92 - read your original comment below and I took that as not very complimentary to Ms. Ripley. If I misinterpeted your comment than I aologize. I pointed out her Tony award win to say that obviously somebody thought she was pretty good, think she was also nominated (Drama Desk)for that role also. I did not see Marin Mazzie in that role so I can not comment on her performance. Just a question, if Marin Mazzie was so amazing how come the show closed fairly quickly after she took over the role.

Actually, when Marin and Jason went into the show in July 2010, it stayed open until January 16, 2011. That's a little more than six months. Closed pretty quickly? Not really.

You didn't misinterpret my post. I wasn't pelting Ripley with roses. I saw her. I thought she was good. She won a Tony. Good for her. Then the second cast went in and the show got even better. I'm not denying anyone a Tony and their moment of glory. (Not that that really matters, anyway.)

JV92- You thought show with second cast was better, that is different from people I know who saw it with both casts. Sometimes that can be due to certain people never think a show can get better once OBC leaves, to each their own. In addition to Ms. Ripley, I thought J Robert Spencer and Aaron Tveitt would be tough acts to follow. As for closing in a little more than 6 months, I consider it quickly while I guess others may not.

That is not closely quickly. Bernadette Peters and Elaine Stritch were replacements in Night Music for about 6 months. That even included an extension. Would you consider that unsuccessful?

The majority of the general public were not buying tickets to N2N just because of Alice. The grosses started dropping while she was still there.

I agree that Mazzie was 'better', although I think my experience was elevated because it was the first 'star' I saw in the role (previously I had only seen Alice's understudy), I had low expectations about the appropriateness of her voice and when I did eventually see Alice on tour about two weeks before it ended her voice was shot.

Mazzie's "You Don't Know" was thrilling. I loved the way/did not expect her to shout through it at points, I loved the novelty of her husband seeing her as an 'emotional wreck'...even the final "You Don't Know" line in the song, which on the broadway.com clips sounds a bit lackluster sounded strong/very much belted in person to me. And how great was her final note of "So Anyway"...watching Alice attempt to hit the final notes of "So Anyway" is one of the most uncomfortable things I have ever seen at a theatre.

RE: her acting, my favourite part was the transition of "I Dreamed a Dance" to "There's a World", where (at least by the end of the run) her sadness/crying seemed to become happiness when her son came close......it really felt to me that (SPOILERS) there was no option for her but to commit suicide.....

I am reminded by a thread on another forum where someone claimed that N2N closed early because of Marin and that the way she emptied the pills into the bin was out of tune with the character (lol).....

Mazzie's billboard on the side of the Booth on 45th Street was an image of her holding back tears. Ripley's was her smiling. As soon as I saw that, before I even got into the theater, I knew she was going to really "get" this role.
