I think this may have been asked before, but have searched for posts with no luck. Just wondering if there any plans for LuPone or Bernadette Peters to return to Broadway...or is it likely that Gypsy will be the 'swansong' for them both? I hope not.
Over here in Lodnon, Elaine Paige says that she has no desire to appear in another musical, and Patti herself hinted that she found her run in Gypsy really difficult in terms of physical and vocal stamina. And it seems so long since Bernadette appeared in Gypsy...nearly 7 years...is this her longest 'break' from Broadway in her career?
Thanks for info. Having seen both of them in Gypsy, I would love to get the chance to see them in other shows. Hope this will happen...

They are going to do a combined show. Lupone + Peters Gypsy. Coming back to the St. James in August.
I'm sure LuPone will come back before Peters, sadly. I don't think either of them have anything planned as of right now although I'm sure Patti would never turn down the chance to play herself again in another show.

Can you imagine what that would be like!!!! I know you're clearly joking, but a concert starring the two wouldn't be such a bad idea, would it?? Didn't the legends Mary martin and Ethel Merman do a concert together quite late on in their careers? Well, why not the same idea for Lupone/Peters...can you imagine the hype? I bet there'd be a huge demand for tickets...at top prices!!! Seriously though, I think if a Lupone/Peters concert was ever to be staged, it would certainly be a real event. They're both in the mature 'stages' of their careers and don't really have to prove anything anymore, so why not 'team up' and create what would be a really exciting event?
There are rumors that Bernadette will play Cora Hoover Hooper in Anyone Can Whistle at Encores this season. Not a return to Broadway, but still.
As for Patti, I remember her alluding to a new David Mamet play (but this was over a year ago).
They'll both be at the Sondheim birthday concert with the NY Philharmonic, though. [and I really really hope they sing "It's Always a Woman"]
I'm crossing my fingers Bernie does WHISTLE. Casting has changed a bit since those rumors started (not totally unsubstantiated rumors by the way) but I still have my bits and pieces crossed. I haven't seen her live on stage since GYPSY.
And there are also rumors floating around that Bernadette might play Sally in the Kennedy Center's revival of FOLLIES. We shall see...
I'm doubtful about Bernadette doing WHISTLE. If it were a done deal, why wouldn't they have announced it with Sutton?
^ It might not be a done deal yet. But I do kind of agree with you, ljay.
I can't help, but agree with ljay as well. As much as I would LOVE Bernadette to play Cora in WHISTLE...I think they would have made it a joint announcement.
I think Bernadette has the chance to come to Broadway though a transfer of the Kennedy Center FOLLIES, or a transfer of the 2011 London Sweeney Todd revival..
I realise that:
* She is old and might not be capable
* It could be too early for a Follies and (especially) a Sweeney revival. Maybe she can handle Follies and if the Sweeney revival happens to be transferred anyway, then Imelda Staunton comes with is as people seem to think she is an 'inspired' choice.
Or that musical version of Whatever Happened to Baby Jane.

I've always had this wonderful dream about Carol Channing and Angela Lansbury playing the dotty Brewster Sisters in a musical version of ARSENIC AND OLD LACE, with a score by Jerry Herman.
I'd be equally happy if Patti and Bernadette played the aunts.
I personally think Patti and Bernadette would be fabulous in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, musical or not.
givesmevoice, I also recall her referencing David Mamet when I saw her at Times Talk last year during the release of Les Mouches. She went as far as to say that he was writing a play with her specifically in mind - or was it that she wanted him to write her a play to star in? I dont remember exactly the details.
I hope she returns soon, or at the very least brings one of her concerts here to Boston.
dshnookie, that's what I was thinking of! If I remember correctly, I think she said she called him and asked him to write a show for her and he said he was already.
Mamet actually wrote Patti a MUSICAL, not a play. Apparently he wrote the songs in addition to the book. It was announced and I believe even poster art was created for a tryout production of the piece in California a few years ago that was eventually canceled. I can't think of the title at the moment. It does exist.
P
P.S. Mamet has written 2 musicals previously, one which he wrote songs for, as well as writing the book for Randy Newman's FAUST.
Pgrenre, the piece you're referring to is A WAITRESS IN YELLOWSTONE.
The Broadway transfer of GYPSY forced LuPone to drop out of the planned world premiere in Los Angeles, which was eventually cancelled all together.
Scamp: Would it be lovely if Patti and Elaine would join forces for a series of concerts? It could start perhaps in London and then go to Broadway for a limited run? I think the odds are better for a LuPone-Paige project, rather than a LuPone-Peters endeavor. After all, both Patti and Elaine have the following in common: "Evita", "Anything Goes", "Sweeney Todd" and "Sunset Boulevard." (I just had a quick mental picture of Patti as Grizabella!!!) Now, THAT would be something else! from RC in Austin, Texas
They'll be headlining the 2nd national tour of Wicked starting in March. Patti as Elphaba and Bernadette as Glinda, naturally.

"Harriett Harris is playing Cora at Encores."
Ok. That's not nearly as exciting as Bernadette would have been.
