And I would agree, however, if you go along to the Globe Theatre or a Split Britches production to name a couple of examples - you'll see whole audiences doing exactly that. It's accepted as the convention and those audiences are exposed to exactly the same conditioning as everyone else, they don't watch different TV or cinema from anyone else, they are used to conventional casting but they just accept male Juliets or female Richard II's.

my friend got the role of Gavroche at our schools production of Les Mis, mainly because A)she's the only one small enough and B)she's only one who can sing high enough
