im new, and i realize that the leading actress race at this year tonys has been discussed to death, but im wondering if anyone knows if there was ever a time where kristen was considered for the "best featured actress" category for the tonys. im not saying that she shouldnt be in the leading category, and im not saying she shouldnt or wont win, but was that ever even considered? after all, the producers could justify it to themselves by assuming that it may get the show more tonys if idina won the leading and kristen won the featured actress award.
or maybe that doesnt make any sense... like i said, im new.

Posted: 3/17/04 at 10:50amUnfortunately, the Tony nominating committee doesn't work that way. They basically look at the placement of the actors' names in relation to the title of the show. Both Idina and Kristen's names appear above the title of WICKED...although one is slightly raised. Check the marquee and inside the Playbill. Makes sense doesn't it? I'm waiting for the time when the Tony people can follow the nominating ways of their Hollywood counterparts and base the nominations on the roles themselves.

Posted: 3/17/04 at 11:26amFurthermore, I believe there is a cut-off date, a certain number of days after the show opens, where the producers have their chance to petition the placement of actors. The producers never protested that Kristin be placed in the leading category and that really is where she belongs.

You know, the bobblehead reminds me of Lina Lamont in Singin in the Rain. Kind of cute, perky, admired....
Then she opens her mouth.

*sigh*
o no... that is not what i intended when i made this post, i just wanted an answer to a question, so please dont make it an "i hate kristen" thread, though i see the comparison, the joke with lina lomont is that she has no talent. kristen may annoy you, but she is talented.

"who do u guys think will be nominated for best featured actress this year."
Some possibilites...
Nancy Anderson, Wonderful Town (why not?)
Michelle Federer, Wicked
Randy Graff, Fiddler on the Roof (I don't care what anyone else says, this is a supporting role)
Ann Harada, Avenue Q
Isabel Keating, The Boy From Oz
Liz McCartney, Taboo
Carole Shelley, Wicked
Jennifer Westfeldt, Wonderful Town
Karen Ziemba, Never Gonna Dance
As for Chenoweth...
I have not seen WICKED, but I have heard that Menzel and Chenoweth are equally good and both deserving of a Tony Award. My opinion on this is simple: Chenoweth should have been campaigning for the supporting category. Now, this will present a big problem when it comes to the actual voting. At worse, this could result in a split vote and... neither getting anything. The same sort of thing happened in 2000 with Lane and Broderick, but that was easy, since everyone agreed that Lane's performance was stronger. According to the polls on this board, the Idina/Kristen vote is 50-50. The producers should have sucked up their pride and just campaigned Chenoweth for supporting. It just makes things so much easier.
For example (despite what people say), Julianne Moore was the lead role in THE HOURS. Of the three leading ladies, she had the most screen time and the story centered around her. However, with her inevitable (and well-deserved) nomination for FAR FROM HEAVEN on the way, they simply had to nominate her for supporting, in order to give her that much more of a shot at the Oscar. Unfortunately, the usually wonderful Nicole Kidman (who had substantially less screen time than Streep and Moore) won the Oscar for her so-so Virginia Woolf.
See my point? My point is that if Chenoweth was nominated for supporting Menzel and her would be shoo-ins.

Posted: 3/17/04 at 7:21pmbroadway86- im really leaning towards that too. it is a really big part for the supporting category, but she is sort of supporting the elphaba part. it would have made things easier, but then again, kristen is so awsome, and she is being considered for the lead actress tony when her role is smaller than idinas, so if she was nominated in featured actress, it would almost be a sure thing (im not sure about that, but it seems that way)

They do, but I don't agree with nominating them together. They're each individual actresses with separate roles, so why nominate them as if they are one character/actress?
I agree with broadway86's choices for featured actress, although they have to be narrowed down. I don't think Federer and Shelley both have to be nominated for Wicked. If I had to pick one, it'd probably be Shelley, since she's consistent in her wonderful role, and because she doesn't yet have a tony with so many broadway credits to her name.
I don't know much about Wonderful Town, but I think Westfeldt is a little bit more featured/supporting than Anderson is. I would put her into the category.
As far as Kristin goes, I thought at first she should have been eligible for the supporting actress category, but she is a leading actress, and her and Idina's part are pretty much equal, although very different. It'll be interesting to see how it pans out, but I'm crossing my fingers for Idina this year.
