Because to some people, it's not just about being able to look at them on a big screen.

And no, I don't think they've begun filming. They've definitely started rehearsals and recordings, I think - but if I remember correctly, filming does not begin until MARCH.

It kinda matters, because as we all know, a good musical can be ruined by film. Let's see...

Godspell
Sweet Charity
The Pajama Game
The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas
Annie (The original film - the remake was better)
Hair
Cabaret

Anyone else care to add?

"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive. "Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot." "No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one." Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.

RENT is, in my opinion, the greatest musical, and it will be for a long long time....as a fan I will always love the staged version of RENT...will Hollywood make a poopy movie with it? Maybe, maybe not, but I don't take it personally if they do...

but c'mon, it is Taye and Adam...

Yes, and as much as I love Taye and Adam, they can't make the film. There are a lot of ways in which this thing can be seriously f*cked up. And, because I love the show, I hope it's not. A screwed up version of it in ANY form is a bad reflection on the show, and it's going to be disappointing for devout fans. That's really naive.

I love RENT like no one's business and I hope that they make a movie which convey's RENT's message and gets people interested in the original piece...

But to get all huffy and puffy over a movie script which was posted on the internet I think is a little naive in itself.

And don't mock the power of Taye and Adam.

Exactly Emcee. Wow. I never thought that actually trying to have an intelligent conversation about a movie version of a well like musical would get complaints. Usually its the threads like "OMG I CANT BELIEVE WE WILL ACTUALLY SEE TAYE ADAM AND IDINA ON THE BIG SCREEN" threads theat get flamed. I guess the bwww community is really changing.

Oh my. How much have you read on here, seriously? If you think that I'd dare say anything against Adam Pascal, you have your work cut out for you. My heart would literally break before I'd say anything that wasn't entirely positive for that man. In many more ways than simply being stunningly gorgeous, he is one of my very favourite people in the entire world, and I don't need to preach why to you. My point there was that even though Columbus has the cast he needs to make this movie work, they can only do so much. He still has the majority of the power over how this thing turns out. To think that just because the leading men are enormous pieces of eye candy, this movie will turn out to be halfway decent is the naivete I was referring to.

And, FYI - there are two real versions of that screenplay out there. There are a lot of fan-created versions of what it could end up being as well, but the original first AND second drafts are on the internet. What we're talking about here is not just some random thing people are stumbling across, nor is it anymore about ONE version in general. It's about the film as a whole.

TGIF, I love you.

I must admit to you, half of my argument on here is for argument's sake in general. It's just nice to finally have a conversation with someone on here who actually has a vocabulary bigger than a fourth grader.

with that said, I believe you are mis-understanding me. I too wish for the movie to be at least as half as amazing as it is on stage and for it to be conveyed in a matter that sticks to the original..

Secondly, I'm not saying the movie is going to have to rely on Adam and Taye (and pulease, don't get me started on Adam), because in all honesty, they are only really known to us devoted fans and not the mainstream...my point was, that us devoted fans finally get to see our favorite performers on the big screen.

Menzellover, the link is on the first page of this thread, I think.

LetMeLeave - the devil's advocacy bit didn't really come across, but I'm sorry that you were misunderstood. It really did seem like you were saying that the movie's merit, regardless of its loyalty to the stage show, could lie in getting to see these people up there. To be completely honest, I still haven't made a concrete decision as to what I think about the casting. Some days, I think that the only reason I'm happy about the OBC being semi-reunited is that I'll get to see them all together in just a couple of months on a small excursion about which I'm not really at the liberty to speak. chosen "big celebrities," I wouldn't have been happy, and I go through phases with whether or not I'm truly happy that they've chosen a portion of the OBC, most of which lies in my sense of ownership, mainly over Adam. I've developed an attachment to him in the past year that has a lot more to do with how beautiful he is, and I really miss being able to hop on a subway and see him perform at will, and I can often be found on this board defending and shilling him left and right. But that is an entirely different story. Adam's only following in that movie will be people like us, but Taye's is a name with a pretty sizable bit of celebrity baggage. In any case, I want this movie to rock, but I'm skeptical, because the show is so special to me. And, for the record, as the script develops, it's becoming close and closer to the original libretto.

And, I'm perfectly happy to have a legitimate discussion about this with you, but maybe in the future if that's what you're looking to get, arguing just for the sake of picking a fight isn't the best route to take. You don't have to cause withdrawl of claws around here to get people to share their opinions.

I wasn't saying I came in this thread to start an argument, on the contrary, I came in and made a sarcastic remark which ignited conversation between us, which is what lead me to argue our points. However, arguing opinions is the hardest thing to do and really has no merrit to it. Considering they are our opinions and from the looks of it, neither one of us is going to budge.

You brought up a good point though, CASTING from this film...to be honest with you, I wasn't happy with it at all. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the RENT OBC and think they are the almighty when it comes to the characters in the show. The reason I didn't like the casting was for 2 reasons...

1. Age wise it doesn't make sense and I think we all know that. There's no way Jesse L. Martin looks like a 20 somthing Collins for example...
2. Selfishly the RENT OBC will be unleashed upon the masses and will no longer be ours....tear tear Taye.

I've always wondered about the specific argument about having the RENT OBC be 'unleashed to the public'. While I understand that to some degree, I'd also caution people to keep it in perspective. Should the people who saw it at NYTW got upset that RENT moved to Broadway at all? Should the people who saw the OBC on Broadway be upset now that they no longer "own" the experience of having seen the OBC? It sounds a bit absurd to me. Updated On: 1/23/05 at 07:10 PM

This has been discussed ad nauseum in the link posted above as well in the "welcome anthony rapp" thread.

For those with qualms about the '80s context, do a search and check it out. It's apparently closer to 89 than 85. Huge difference.

(And since Dylan and Ginsberg were beat icons of the 50s and 60s, I can't imagine why that would be an anachronism for them to be mentioned in 85, if that's when the final version were to take place. Anyhoo.)

Right, but I admitted to the fact that I know my opinons aren't solid yet. It's important to me, and I talk about it a lot... perhaps too much. A lot of us like tp speculate, especially with the little bits of information and insight that we've been given. I've always been of the belief that there's nothing wrong with arguing your opinions, when those opinions are based on fact. A little excersise is good for the brain.

The age issue is this - very few of the characters' ages are written into the libretto, though people seem to think that stereotypes give a pretty solid range for most of them. Columbus insisted upon meeting with the OBC'ers before he cast them, to make sure that they didn't look too old. His choice - whether it be because they indeed look young enough, or simply because he wanted them - was the deciding factor..... and now, we've got them. Honestly, I think I'd have been happiest with complete unknowns that had previously performed the parts on stage.

And yes. As stupid as I feel admitting it, I share the selfish sentiments.

And you did say that part of your point was argument just for the sake of argument, but, voided point, I guess. Clarification

eep. ETA - two of your posts snuck in there while I was typing. amasis, you're so smart. And now I feel silly... even though I clarified in hating to admit what I did.

Amasis -My point about unleashing the OBC onto the public corilates with my first point in that they are all too old.

Your argument about NYTW fans being upset about the show going to Broadway doesn't really do anything for me, considering a musicals main goal in the world is to make it to Broadway and be sucsessful.

luvTheEmcee - I agree with you on certain aspects of your argument concerning the ages and what not. Part of me would have loved to see other people play the role on the big screen....however, I'm glad they got people who can actually sing. My point is that Adam looks a lot older than Rosario Dawson (who I believe is playing Mimi) and Jesse L Martin looks like he just stepped off the set of Law and Order...whoops, my B, because he did. RENT to me is about young people not 30 year old castmembers who played in the show 10 years ago.

Makeup works like magic

If you can make someone look old, you can make them look young.

Can you deal with that?

Why am I still typing?
