what's with all the x-tra characters & the flash bak? is "john" supposed 2 b larson?
"What's with all the extra characters and the flashback? Is "John" supposed to be Larson?"
So, I started reading it, and it's not looking good. First of all, this mid-80's crap will throw everything offNot much was known of AIDS, and a "Life Support" meeting wouldn't have happened in 1985, considering that most people didn't know they had it then. And La Vie Boheme...Are they gonna change the lyric "Ginsberg, Dylan, Cunningham and Cage"? as well as an ealier point "To people living with not dying from disease"
They'll have to cut Alexi Darling's e-mail and pager, and Benny's gonna have to lose his cellphone. And Doc Martin's???

anyone know where i can find the script for the film to read?
A later revised version was posted and it sounds alot better. There are no extra characters and the lyrics are more how they should be. Though, unfortunately, there are some changes. The most jurastic being the whole second verse of Over the Moon being cut out and Happy New Year A and B are now just dialogue along with alot of other smaller bits like Tune up 1 etc. Its not too far off and I must admit, the way they are going about shooting it sounds pretty cool. But then again, who knows if the script is even legit. But here is the link for anyone who is interested.

The first act takes place in one night - Christmas Eve.
Why, after Light My Candle does it say "Next Day"?
haha. this is hilarious. I mean, as a RENT fan it's sad, but it's also frikin' hilarious...
oh man, musetta i just lol'ed that - and my roommate woke up...
yeah, i read the whole thing and...it's not very pretty. i think it will make for a decent "movie musical", but not have the real spirit of rent. for instance, glory is all flash backs of roger with april...what the hell does that have to do with the song??? roger is singing about his future, the glory he hopes to obtain before he's gone, and it's all about his past...and take me or leave me is sung at their (maureen and joane's) engagement party - btw it's set in the 80's, i don't think that was a much of an issuse then as it is now, and since when is rent about "issues" like that...it's about people living thier lives to the fullest - if it's edgy then it is but i don't believe it was ever meant to be a platform for social issues. sure it brings up some social issues and disregards all boundries, but not because it tries to shock (well, yeah in the case of la vie boheme :) but because it is real...
there is my rant. well, part of it i could keep on going but i shall stop there :)

this may not even be the shooting/final script. this may just be one of many drafts.

Well, why is Roger depressed? How does he know he has AIDS? Why is he constantly going to the edge of the building, possibly to jump? Where else in the script do you want the visual of April killing herself? Mark's little monologue saying what happened won't cut it in a movie.
"And 'Take me or Leave me' is sung at their (Maureen and Joanne's) engagement party."
It's not quite an engagement party, but a party celebrating their partnership.

While yes, the script does change the timeframe, it's not that bad. I mean, just how believable is it that all that happens in Act 1 happens within a few hours? Granted, the musical says its one magic night, but again, the movie must have a certain credibility.
"First of all, this mid-80's crap..."
The screenplay never says it takes place in the 80s. In a series of flashbacks, the screen shows NYC in the 80s. That doesn't mean the movie is set in the 80s, just that they are showing the state of the city in the 80s, which sets the story perfectly. That part of the flashback is open to interpretation (and who knows, it may just have been a typo, which there are several in the script).
"Extra Characters"
I don't recall any in the newest version we have. Gordon (or was it Steve? I don't remember) from the life support meeting has a bigger part, but that's mostly it.
And, just so you all know, the Rent has been discussed relentlessly before, at least 20 pages worth. In fact, we ran out of things to discuss, so the thread died. However, if you wish, feel free to revive it
RENT SCREENPLAY
The screenplay is not important. As long as Idina is in it, it will be a bif fat fabulous hit!
Why can't we just sing it. Come on, that's all I care about, I just want the *near* original cast to be remembered in the annals of movie history, actually preforming the show. I dunno, I'm just selfish because I know it would be hard for it to be sung all the way through. Oh well, one can hope.

Just a question, but how real is it? I mean it's the"script" on the internet? I'm sorry, just a bit confused on how this could be real?
What!!! Out Tonight doesn't take place on the fire escape!!! That's crazy. Jonathan and Matthew have too many lines.
Okay. I think it was figured that the plot could very well take place in the late 80's, even though we'd previously thought it was the early nineties. I don't think it's certain whether the label in the script is a mistake or not, but it's not terribly unrealistic. Should the film take place in the 80's, though, the only true problem that poses is plot-wise with the gay marriage, but that's another story.
This grittiness all depends on which script you're talking about. The ORIGINAL Chboksy screenplay from something like April 2000 is VERY gritty - multiple sex scenes, as well as seeing April's suicide, Roger finding her after, Mimi's dance at the Cat Scratch Club, Roger in withdrawls, and a lot of very heavy material. Columbus' first draft (hence the second "real" draft - though obviously changes are still very much under way) is a little bit less gritty, but some of that stuff is still in there. The movie *is* going to be rated R, most likely.
There are often ten to twenty sets of changes to a movie script before it even starts shooting, so don't be surprised if the finished film is quite different from this (possibly) very early draft. It's fun to speculate, but no one should get upset yet, as we just don't know.
When does filming start? I heard it's gonna be in san francisco, y not NYC? Also, does anyone know approx. when it'll come out?
It's expected to be released by Christmas 2005.
They've already started filming. And all interiors are being shot in SF, because it's easier to do in a studio there. And the exteriors are being shot here in NYC.
P.S. I heard a rumor that they will not be adding new songs in, because the Larson estate will not let them. I hope this rumor is true.

Does it really matter kids? We will all still love the musical even if the movie is a little weird...but seriously, in all honesty...we get to see Adam Taye and Idina on a 20 foot screen. Who cares what the movie is about really?!
