Yes, however, this cast deserves to live on record.
Think about the entire premise behind the Summer Stars series. It's not about the costumes, scenery, glitz and glamour. Everything is about the stars and the talent of the cast onstage.
Doesn't it deserve to live on record?

I highly doubt if the show goes to London and back to the US that Patti's Rose will go un-recorded.
Some shows have 20 + recordings. Gypsy deserves it.

I would normally say no, too expensive. But this is Gypsy and it's Patti.
Every great actress has done this role, and each one of them has had it preserved. We'll see, but I'm hopeful.

Posted: 7/22/07 at 2:29pmHaving seen it last night, it would be a crim if her Rose wasn't recorded. Her vocals were flawless (and her acting was wonderful as well). The performances of the rest of the cast, especially Leigh Ann Larkin, Laura Benanti, and Boyd Gaines also need to be captured.

Doesn't Nonesuch want to get rid of their 89 revival recording of this show? As that recording is practically a disaster. They should just replace it in their catalogue with this GYPSY. I think someone suggested that before.
Tyne was amazing in the part.. but she was sick for the recording. And it really shows. She's almost not listenable at points. Though her ROSE'S TURN is pretty great.

Tyne was great in the part but I think that it was a marketing spin that declared her "sick" for the recording session. She sounds the same on her other recordings. CALL ME MADAM immediately comes to mind.

Hmm I haven't heard her CALL ME MADAM.
But at some points it sounds like her voice cracks a bit in GYPSY. I think she might have been sick. And from what I've heard of her live in the part...she did sound a bit better.

I never realized Tyne was good at all.
However, Patti, on the other hand... I'd kill to have an official recording!!!

It was indeed suggested on the first of many threads regarding a new GYPSY recording that Nonesuch was interested in replacing the '89 revival. Perhaps Tyne Daly was a genius in the part better than Merman herself, I don't know, I was three in '89 so I can't say whether she was great or not. However, cast recordings are made to preserve at least a part of a performance on record for posterity. Daly's GYPSY cast recording is a debacle, IMO. She just sounds terrible and I find it impossible to get through any of her numbers.
Given the fact it will probably be the last time this full cast performs together (Benanti has a TV show, Gaines is doing PYGMALION, Nancy Opel is doing DROWSY), I think it'd be great if a cast recording were made.

Coolkid it is good that you said official.
If I was the producer I would wait before it comes back to Broadway next season. That way they can put "Broadway Cast" and sell more copies. Why do it now when it is just going to get better?

It's not coming to Broadway, but London is still a good possibility and then at least Patti's Rose would be recorded. But... I agree.... I want a recording with THIS cast... they are so great together, and Gaines and Benanti deserve it too.
