this is kind of funny.
when i went to see "mary poppins" i was wondering why rebecca luker didnt list "chitty chitty bang bang" in her bio.
and then i wondered how laura bell bundy could be doing both "legally blonde" and "xanadu" at the same time.
erin dilly and rebecca luker are the interchangeable older bway blondes, to me anyways. and kerry butler and laura bell bundy, are their younger counterparts. (if they do a revival of "side show" either of these pairs would work as twins)

In shows like CHITTY and POPPINS, they play these broad characatures that easily allow for their replacement.
See Luker at the top of her game in THE MUSIC MAN or NINE, and you'll see that Erin Dilly has NOTHING on Luker.

Agreed (re: Luker).
Throw Chenoweth into the mix.

no chenoweth for me - she is too annoying and cloying to be confused with anyone else - i know a chenoweth when i see it, and then i run the other way before my eardrums burst and bleed all over me.

?
I don't see Kerry Butler and LBB as alike.

I don't see the correlation of Laura Bell Bundy and Kerry Butler either.
Rebecca Luker on the other hand - bland (I have seen her in many shows, and always felt the same way).

LOL.
Not that I think LBB could take on any role, but she's just interchangeable with bland.

Posted: 5/18/07 at 3:17pmI get a lot of the blondes on Broadway mixed up as well. For me, I can barely separate Kendra Kassebaum and Kate Reinders and I've seen them both perform!

Erin is younger than Kerry.
Just one example of how wrong you are.

I hope you are just talking about her speaking voice.

I think Luker, Dilly, Bundy, and Butler are all indeed interchangeable. I didn't see Luker in NINE though, I did hear she was even better than Benanti, but in every cast recording of Luker that I've heard and few videos, she defines bland.
Not even going to get started on Bundy's generic looks, voice, and acting...

The Music Man was Luker at the top of her game? Ouch, I actually thought she was an animatronic until I realized she was a real person way after.

Bundy has the most generic look I've seen. I could see plenty of girls who look exactly like her at my school.

Posted: 5/18/07 at 8:36pmI agree, but she's a lot more talented than the girls that look like her at my school. I see Bundy as a younger, less amazing version of Chenoweth.

Posted: 5/18/07 at 8:42pmLuker is a horrible actress. Very boring. She acts from the neck up with every vain popping with intensity. Dreadful.

Bundy isn't even comparable to Chenoweth. Bundy does not have anything unique about her. She has no where near the training versatility(I'm talking more vocally versatile) of Chenoweth, even in her younger days.

Posted: 5/18/07 at 9:45pmWhile I don't get them confused, Kelli O'Hara reminds me a lot of Marin Mazzie- physically and vocally. I would love to see O'Hara in some roles that Mazzie originated (Clara in Passion, Mother in Ragtime).

I feel the same way about everything you said. I have always though Kelli sounded and looked quite a bit like Marin. I have also thought she should do Clara in Passion and Mother when she gets a bit older.

I agree with the thoughts on Luker. Even though I did love her voice when she was younger, now it seems to me that she has no control of her upper and lower register. But, Luker is my favorite, recorded, Magnolia in Show Boat (its too bad Mark Jacoby ruins all of her songs) and Luker is incredible on the Encores! recording of "The Boys From Syracuse".
Even though Kelii has probably proven herself more I feel that Kelli O'Hara and Erin Dilly are interchangeable. And to me Kelli sounds nothing like Marin Mazzie. Marin Mazzie has a much richer, full bodied and dramatic voice then Kelii O'Hara does.

I agree with jewishboy regarding Kelli O'Hara and Marin Mazzie. I'm not a big fan of O'Hara--save for THE LIGHT OF THE PIAZZA. I don't think she looks like Mazzie or has any of Mazzie's great belt or her elegant flair. O'Hara is quite talented but Marin Mazzie is in a class of her own, IMO.
Having said that, Kelli O'Hara is not interchangeable like many of the girls listed on here.
I also don't think Laura Bell Bundy can be compared to Chenowetht. Whatever you wanna say about Chenoweth, she has immense star power when she's on stage...Laura "Bland" Bundy could be replaced by any generic blonde and I doubt anyone would notice the difference.

Thanks, Ray. I have yet to see Legally Blonde, but after hearing everything about Bundy I really have no urge to go. Have you ever heard Luker on The Boys From Syracuse or Show Boat albums? Because I really think she sparkles on those two albums.

Posted: 5/20/07 at 12:05amFunny you mention SHOW BOAT because I have the '94 revival recording but honestly have never cared to listen to Luker's tracks...I always skip right to Lonette McKee's numbers (I can't get enough of her). Now that you mention that Luker is good as Magnolia I'll definitely give it a listen.

Oh, I know exactly what you mean. I can listen to Lonette McKee's Bill forever. Luker's voice is not as "round" or layered as Barbara Cook, but it is a very beautiful soprano that fits Magnolia to a "t". Just be aware of Mark Jacoby's horrid and shrill voice for Ravenal.
