how many you you guys and gals have i phones do you love them or you like lisening to the cd and reading the liner note and sometimes the lyrics.
I have an itouch but I don't buy much music online as I also like to have physical copies of the CD/Artwork/Liner Notes for my collection. I just transfer onto itunes and listen on my itouch or on my laptop. The CD basically sits in its case but I do pull out the lyrics/liner notes often.
I have an iPhone and just download most of my music, all except cast recordings. I do like to have the liner notes and everything for those. But I still import them into my phone. :)
You can't compare iPhones to CDs- Digital music to CDs, or mp3 players to CD players, but iPhones and CDs are not equatable.
I rarely, if ever, buy CDs anymore. I can Google the lyrics if I need them, I don't care who plays the bongos on track 4, or if they thank God, and all the pictures are available online. I don't want to spend $15 to buy 12 songs when I only like 3 of them. I don't have the space to store hundreds of CDs to add up to the music collection I've acquired online. If I'm causing the downfall of the music industry, so be it, but I've wasted money on too much crap over the years to willingly perpetuate the system.

^ That's what I do for popular music...but for musicals, I get the CD.
I prefer CDs....for all my music. In fact I downloaded my first cd just a few weeks ago. HATE not having the entire product.
I don't download any musical theatre. I won't even burn them from friends. I have ever physical copy of every musical I own.
I think it's been well over a year and a half since I last bought a CD. Like organgeskittles, I don't have the space to physically store all the music that I have. Most of my music is acquired through iTunes or through other sources like mixed CDs, song trading, etc.
One thing I love about buying music on iTunes is that you're not forced to buy the whole album; you can select which songs you want and buy them individually. I hated how I would have to pay $15 or $20 for a CD where I only liked half the songs.
I think I may have succombed to buying music online. It kind of happened without me realizing it! I have a ZUNE and I now find myself buying music online from the Zune Marketplace. I am one of those who always had to have the CD with the liner notes. I now find that I use my computer to listen to music at home. I have not used my stereo in over a year. (Other than for television) Now I will say that my stereo has been acting up and I just haven't replaced it since I can listen to music on my computer (Which has nice speakers connected to it). I am thinking, it is time for a new stereo! But one of the nice things with my Zune is that I can create playlists. So I can put all of the music I want in a playlist and then hit shuffle if I want.
I really thought this would never happen with me but..oh well!
For me personally, CDs went from being something that I listened to to just being something that I use to transfer music onto my computer.
I always get the physical CD. I-pods and such have changed my method of listening to a degree. Now when a new CD arrives I transfer the contents into the computer for later use on whatever listening device, and also for use on my radio program. The playlists feature is a godsend for making the programming flow and working out perfect segues.
But I still want the actual CD on my shelf with the booklet and all packaging.
A music file can be erased. The CD is permanent.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
For me, CDs are expensive ebcause I have to order them in from the UK. But if it is a show I like I will get the CD as the quality is better, esp. if you have a good sound system to listen to it on. I may download a cast album first to hear if I like it (this mainly goes for new shows). If I like it then I will buy the real thing.
There usually is a huge difference in sound from what is on a CD and what is compressed into a mp3 file, and this difference is really noticeable when you listen to it on a big system.

That.
Ditto. I love my CDs. I'll buy the odd solo track here and there on iTunes, but I love my CDs with their cases and their liner notes and their pictures. Just 'cos I only ever listen to my iPod doesn't mean I don't love and use my CDs.

If it's a show I really loved like "Good Vibrations" or "Cry Baby" I buy the CD. I like to "Have it" and be able to look at the lyrics and pictures and stuff.
For other shows I'm not as crazy about like the Ragtime revival or "In My Life" I'm satisfied with the downloads.
From an eco-perspective, buying online is a lot better- no resources used to create the cd and case that are hard to recycle and no oil burned/carbon released in shipping the cds across the world and people driving to get them from the store. But, to each their own. Some people like their CDs, I like living on planet Earth. Whatever.

^That was mean...haha. You have your reasons, others have theirs. That is actually the only reason I don't buy CDs. To save packaging.

I like to have mostly CD's o transfer to my iPod. I like having the lyric booklet and synopsis so I can follow along, especially with my first listen, because most shows I am unable to see. If it is a show I have seen and know and I think it's pretty good, I usually buy it on iTunes if I have money from a gift card. I listen to music mostly when I fall asleep because it relaxes me, so most of the time, I don't read the liner notes, but they are interesting to have. If it is released digitally first, I'll buy it on iTunes, except in the rare case of Next to Normal where I bought it on iTunes and I later bought a physical copy at Barnes & Noble. The booklet is something I like to have but don't need.

I don't really care. I hate people on their high horses.
They're also petroleum products, so buying a copy of Next to Normal puts money into the hands of terrorists!

I buy everything off of itunes for a few reasons. The first is that it is often cheaper to even buy the whole cd on itunes than it is to buy the physical disk. Another is that I don't have to wait for it to arrive-it "ships" instantly. Also, I don't have to worry about storing the cds. However, I only buy complete cast recordings on itunes, I don't pick and choose songs. Also, I divide every show up into its own playlist, which I find is the easiest way to listen.

For pop music, I prefer downloads. For a theater score, I like to have the entire show - I still download the songs, though, although I have to admit sometimes I still buy the CD. It still feels more collectible.
