Posted: 4/17/06 at 3:11pmVery good decision. None of those plays deserved the prize.

wtf.
I'm stunned.
Agree with Margo, though.
Question: were any musicals eligble? (not that any of them deserve it)
re: pulitzer prizes#6
Posted: 4/17/06 at 3:13pmSeveral were eligible, but apparently none were deemed worthy of consideration by this year's committee.

margo,
in your opinion what would've been the best choice if they had to choose one?
re: pulitzer prizes#8
Posted: 4/17/06 at 3:15pmWhat about "Piazza"? I'm surprised that wasn't a finalist.
re: pulitzer prizes#9
Posted: 4/17/06 at 3:16pmCool. Well, this is exciting...kinda. It's cool to see something this rare, and yet, it's pretty uncool not to have a Pulitzer Prize at the same time. Sure says something about the current state of American Drama.
re: pulitzer prizes#10
Posted: 4/17/06 at 3:17pmPIAZZA was eligible two years ago, during its Chicago run.

In an earlier Pulitzer thread, I actually stated that if I were on the committee, I would have voted for "No Award." This was one of the weakest years for new American plays in at least a decade.
If I had to vote for something, it might have been for "In the Continuum" which at least was smart, affecting and timely (though apparently Anna Deveare Smith blackballed it from consideration this year -- no one knows why yet).

Amen to that!

Screw you guys, I'm going home.
It's not my fault you can't understand the complex themes and symbolisms presented in In My Life. It's because you are so used to Sondheim feeding you everything on a silver platter. Now you aren't used to thinking on your own.

some good choices in reporting and commentary but there was nothing worth awarding this year in theater, imo.
one of the worst years i can remember. i can't comment on the whole anna deveare smith thing, but i know some very po'd people, that's all i'm sayin'.
EDIT: i do not know the Continuum ladies. i am referring to comments i have been hearing regarding miss deveare smith's non-support of their show. i think the chorus is demanding some sort of explaination.

Thank God they didn't give it to Red Light Winter. I would've been really disappointed if they did.
Don't know what I would've given it to if I had to choose one. Jenny Chow is pretty great out of all the names they were tossing around, but I don't know.

I have to say that I actually was hopeful that Adam Rapp would win the Pultizer this year. RLW was one of the best shows I've seen off-B'way in the past couple of years (possibly second only to BUG). At any rate, I think that calling "no award" is slightly close to cop-out territory. When they finished the announcements and President Bollinger (president of Columbia University) walked out of the World Room, I was mightly tempted to kick him in the shins and say: "No drama award? You really are an embarassment to this institution sometimes." But I restrained myself and just pouted my way across campus.
But I have to agree. I thought that IN MY LIFE was going to be the fore-runner this year. I have never been more disappointed. :)
