Aww cute.... I hope to God this doesn't SUCK like Rent, Phantom and The Producers..... something tells me it won't be a gem like Dreamgirls.

Can't wait!
Agreed with Sylar. I'm worried about this one.
Not HALF as worried as I am about Sweeney, but still.
Well unlike DREAMGIRLS, RENT, PHANTOM or even THE PRODUCERS, HAIRSPRAY isn't aiming to be an "Oscar contender" - just a fun, fluffy musical movie. It shouldn't be too hard to succeed on that level.
keyword. fluffy. ha ha... ha.

Is it not being produced by the same guys who did Chicago and Dreamgirls?
If so if they put "From the people who brought you Chicago and Dreamgirls..." that should bring people in. PLUS who wouldn't want to see John Travolta in drag!? lol

1. Rikki is playing a judge on The Corny Collins Show.
2. Travolta is not in 'drag'. simply put, he is playing a genuine all woman character.

No, if Harvey Fierstein were playing Edna he'd be playing a woman. If John Goodman were playing Edna HE'D be playing a woman! But when it's JOHN TRAVOLTA playing Edna he is simply playing a man in drag!

Edna has always been a genuine woman. I read in an interview with Harvey back when the show opened, that Edna is 100% woman. She is not a man dressed up in woman's clothes, and is to be taken seriously as a full on woman. That was part of the beauty of Harvey's warm portrayal of Edna.

I don't think Rent, Producers, or Phantom were looking to be Oscar contenders either and they still sucked....
Everything I've seen from the movie so far looks fine to me...except Travolta. I can see how having him playing the role might seem like a good idea, but frankly, he looks weird in the makeup to me. It makes the considerable amount of distance between his eyes and his mouth more noticeable and his famous chin just looks odd with all the fat added to it in my opinion. Maybe the way he's being shot will make him look better to me in the actual movie. I hope so.

I just wish they got Harvey...
Me too!
I am sad they didn't
I disagree...I think RENT, THE PRODUCERS, and PHANTOM were indeed looking to be Oscar contenders.
RENT and THE PRODUCERS ran "For your consideration" ads, and I'm not sure about PHANTOM - but it was nominated for a couple Oscars and Golden Globes. I do think PHANTOM was Oscar bait for them.

Likewise, the time when these movies were released also indicated they were hoping for some Oscar love. These were all released towards the end of the year. Hairspray is scheduled for release as a summer movie. The Oscar-baiting musical for 2007 will be Sweeney Todd.
