Honest question.
Are people not because they're not going to see it? Bad marketing? PR? People not liking it? Or people aren't speaking up?
Just wondering.
Some of us are
going crazy.

I didn't think it lived up to it's hype.

^ Says you.
Let it open (tomorrow). Let the word spread. It's brilliant.
I agree. I loved this show. The producers have been having a difficult time agreeing on a marketing strategy. I hope they don't kill it before it builds an audience.
I saw it the other night and the audience went nuts for it. Let's hope the critics feel the same...
I liked it, but didn't think it was as good as I could have been. I had a good time, but thought the overall show was just okay. Brilliant score, though.
The score is what's going to sell this show. I suggest they start running commercials like crazy. A performance on THE VIEW couldn't hurt, either.
If songs like "I Don't Do Sadness", "Left Behind", or anything else from the show were on the radio, I might actually listen to the radio.
Hint hint.
I think the first 20 minutes of the second act are really moving, but the rest of the show is brilliant as well!
Seeing that every other thread on this board is about how--everyone's favorite word--AMAZING it is, I'd say the theater geeks are talking about it.

What I love is that when there are just as many threads about a show like "Wicked" on this board, many people bitch and moan. Yet, there have been many, many threads, as of late, regarding this over-hyped show (in my opinion) and no one complains about that...why is that? Oh, wait, I think I know...it's "cool" to like "Spring Awakening" but not cool to like "Wicked," right?
Looking at the numbers for the past couple of weeks, hopefully this show won't be sticking around for too long...again, just my opinion (and hope). I didn't like it, it's just not that good.

^ Have you ever thought people like Spring Awakening?
Well Jukebox, because Wicked isn't a good show. And that is just MY opinion.
I hope this show DOES stick around, for a long, long time.
I saw it tonight for the first time. It is beyond brilliant!

See, regardless of if you think this is a good show and "Wicked" isn't, it confuses me that people have begun to apologize for starting a thread on "Wicked" because they know it'll lead to a form of lame verbal assault, via the Internet...why is that, and yet, no one has commented on the many, many, many threads about this show??? It's odd, don't ya think?

Vincent-
Thanks for dragging Wicked into a thread that had nothing to do with the show.
Brilliant.

I haven't seen it, or heard much of the music (only snippets), but I am very interested in this show. Seems like it could be really good.
That said, why must Wicked be brought into every thread? It's not QUITE the same since Spring Awakening hasn't even opened yet and the Wicked threads are still going strong after 3 years.

The thing is, though, that that's not always true. If it's an immature kind of thread, people tend to respond immaturely.
Back to Spring Awakening- I've heard the music for this, and I'm absolutely in love with the show. I want to see this so badly.

To answer the original question, it is, in my opinion, a mediocre show that failed to live up to it's hype. The music is it's strongest point, but it doesn't have the melodious, catchy show-stopping numbers that recent hits like Rent or Hairspray have had. The ending is very anti-climatic and it feels like it's trying way too hard to be an edgy musical.
I don't think there's anything wrong with the production of the show, or even the writing. What I didn't like about it was so much of what made the original play great. The scenes were too choppy, they introduced sub-plots that were never mentioned again, and you only got to really know and care about one, maybe two people.
It just seems like they wanted to touch on every single problem a teen could have, so they went through them all - one into the other - and then finally resolved the "plot" in the end. It IS anti-climactic. I wish this show was brilliant...but I just don't see it. I do, however, think it's the most ambitious show since CAROLINE.
What is there in the Broadway version that isn't in the original play?
Nothing big.
If SPRING AWAKENING (the play) was produced on Broadway now as a straight play, I would still have the same problems with it. Revolutionary, groundbreaking, and brilliant inteh 1890's doesn't mean it's still that way now. It's not Shakespeare.
