For the record, the ending of the original play is very bizarre.
SPOILERS!!
Melchior finds out about Wendla at the graveyard and is stopped by Moritz, who has his disembodied head under his arm. Moritz tries to convince Melchior to join him. Melchior is about to when a deus ex machina character called the Masked Man arrives and basically talks Melchior out of it, saying life is to be lived and Moritz had options that he chose not to act upon. Moritz tells Melchior he just wanted to be with his friend again. Melchior leaves with the Masked Man and Moritz has a brief monologue about lying in his grave and staring at the moon. The end.
