Regarding Ms. Heche, she is actually one of the most stunning women I've seen up close. Sat front row twice for "20th Century" and almost fainted.

Rosie is a very complicated person who did alot for Broadway. I'm from the midwest and hadn't heard of RENT, but when the cast sang Seasons of Love on Rosie, it blew me away. For people far from NYC to get to see and hear (loved her recaps of events she attended) on her show, it did expand horizons and maybe changed lives. That is a powerful thing.

Of course, as well as building people up, the tearing down commenced and Rosie took so much negative media coverage. She seemed like two different people and some folks did seem taken aback by her behavior. From Queen of Nice, to lesbian trying to change the world. Of course, Rosie was the same person, but so many people concentrated on the negative. She always had the drive and strong beliefs (kissing off KMart), but now alot of people didn't agree with her causes. Of course, those people are just plain wrong, IMHO.

I didn't necessarily like how Rosie kept quiet about her orientation, but I think she did what she thought was best. She wanted to have an impact on kids and young people. Show them to dream and believe in themselves. She knew that message would get gunked up if sexuality came into it. Other things probably came in to her decision to stay in the closet on tv (ratings, the producers, her own lack of being comfortable with it) but I think the main thing was her feelings about kids.

but I don't think she ever discribed him (Tom) as anything other than "a cutie patootie."

So true. I believe she said repeatedly that she just wanted him to mow her lawn without a shirt on - and that was it.

And thanks to whoever brought up the Barbara S. thing. I hadn't thought of that - but she went as overboard over Barbara as she did for Tom. The "smokescreen" accusation is ridiculous in my opinion.

Rosie is a great human being. She's been through a lot and yes it is her choice to be in the spotlight...however...YOU are not in the spotlight. YOU (and when I say YOU I mean anyone here for the most part) have not been in the same position as Rosie has been. YOU have not had to keep a popular show on the air in middle America. YOU have not been sued by a magazine bearing your name. and YOU have not chosen to use your celebrity to better the world you're in. Yes, she has flaws, let he who is without sin cast the first stone...I mean PLEASE...

I just don't understand how people can sit around here judging someone they know nothing about. You have never walked a day in her shoes and therefore have no reason to make judgement calls on her actions. Bottom line, she has done great things for this community, the Broadway community as well as the gay community. If you feel her timing was off, or that she "lied" for years, write her a letter. Or better yet, write Tom Cruise a letter.

I don't care what anyone else says, Rosie O'Donnell is one of the most influential people when it comes to Broadway and without her, the Tonys would've been taken off the network years ago and dozens of long-running shows would've closed weeks after opening. A New Yorker all my life, I didn't even really know what Broadway was before I started watching her show, and she has been my major inspiration for a number of years.

She may be loud and sometimes rude, but she fights for what she believes in and she's done an enormous amount of good for millions of people, particulary the theater community. Those are the qualities I think people should be focusing on. Not whether or not she hid her homosexuality or shouted out too many curse words.

The 'celebrity' angle has nothing to do with it. If you, as an individual, are able to sit and judge another person's existence, then it doesn't matter who they are or what their reality is. Ultimately, it only reflects on you.

So, those who want to pass judgement on Rosie's choices (or anyone else's, for that matter) feel free. The truth is, she nor anyone else has to answer to you. I'm really intrigued by the people who have taken this opportunity to pass such serious and damning judgement on someone who is living a life that they know nothing about. May you NEVER feel like you're in the position of having YOUR life's choices categorized, analyzed and judged as you seem so willing to do.

The cliche' 'never judge a man until you've walked a mile in his shoes' exists for a reason. Your caterwalling only serves to reflect upon your own immaturity and insecurity. If you feel that there are things that need to be done to help the human race, then by all means, go out and do them. You have NO RIGHT to scream and holler about how someone else is not living the life that you would.

I'm British, live in London and I never really saw her show but i saw the odd clips and heard how she promoted Broadway shows so much. i wish people would do that here. As for coming out - well thats a complicated issue for anyone and i have alot of respect for her that now she has she has really put her money where her mouth is.

i loved Taboo in London and I didnt like what they did to it in NYC - ripped the heart out of it - but at least they tried. Rosie took a risk and thats what its all about. She seems to care about society - like we alll should but not everybody does - I say bravo to her.

I know I'm gonna get knocked for this, but I can't help think that if Rosie actually had the chance of dating Tom Cruise she would??? "lesbian" or not, therefore sometimes I think this sexuality thing is over rated? I'm gay, but hey if I could date some gorgeous gal I would, go figure??! its all a state of mind!ok! ready for the backlash

I think Rosie's heart is in the right place. She has a done a lot for theatre, children's charities, and gay and lesbian causes. But I can see how how some people could be turned off by the way she presents herself. She does come off as sort of brash, rude, and loud. Her hard core New York accent doesn't help either, especially for people who are from other parts of the country.
She did take a risk on Taboo, investing her own money in something that was non-traditional for Broadway. Taboo had its faults, but I'm not sure Rosie should be blamed for all of those. It was her money, but other people like Boy George and Charles Busch and Christopher Renshaw also had creative input into the show. From what I've read, Rosie was quite calm during Taboo, much more than she was in the past on her tv show and the magazine. If anything, Taboo might have been more successful if she had been "meaner" by changing directors over George's objection and delaying the opening.
I don't have a problem with her keeping her sexuality private. It wasn't like she pretended to have boyfriends or did or said anything homophobic. As far as Tom Cruise, it wasn't like she said she wanted to date him, she just admired him and thought he was handsome; so that wasn't pretending to be straight. It as sort of like a schoolgirl crush. I get crushes on female celebrities all the time; it doesn't mean I'm a lesbian as I have no intention of dating these people who I don't even know.

I love you Rosie!!! As much as she supports Broadway, she should have her own key or something. How can you people not like her, she is so giving the this community! Thank you Rosie, for doing what you love.

She was absolutely my favorite Tony host and really tried to bring more focus to Broadway and musical theatre regardless of her sexual orientation or her coming-out process which has absolutely nothing to do with anyone else.

AMEN!!!! Rosie come back to TV or to the Tony awards!

My friend and I watched a tape of her last show the other night and she did a montage of some of the Broadway performances she had on her show over the years (they played "I Will Never Leave You" from "Side Show" over the clips). It was great and made me miss her and her show so much!

Nobody better represented Broadway than Rosie did on her show!

her show used to be on of my favorites my neighbors (who i am no longer friends with) and i used to dream of going to see her show and then it was cancelled. It had a lot of broadway stuff on it and that was wonderful, now its mostly daily shows that have it, and im at school durring those times so i never get to see it.

She's in the upcoming halmark film; riding the bus with my sister. Ive wanted to see her get back into soemthing and i think it's great that she's doing a movie that promotes equality for the mentally challenged. granted....i didnt really like the book so much, until i met the author, then i started to like it better. But im glad to see she's starting to make a come back.

I could not agree more. My CRUSH on Linda Eder is in no way shape or form sexual. I absolutely adore her. Think her voice is a gift from heaven. And I would love to sing a duet with her. (A dream of mine)

This thing that Rosie had about Tom could have been nothing more then that. (Or maybe she wanted to be TOM cause then she could have been with the exquizite Nicole Kidman)

Well, I'll leave the "Tom issue" debating up to the people who probably know more and/or feel more strongly about it than I do.
The thing that bugs me re: her and the sexual orientation is that after she came out she.. hmm I don't know how to say this- she certainly didn't let herself go but she stopped taking any sort of care with her physical appearence. Now the only reason this bothered me was b/c t it just re-enforced everyone's sterotypes of the Butch lesbian. I mean, it just bothers me that after she came out she started looking terrible in pictures everywhere. I wish she would have showed the world that nothing changes when you're a lesbian, and just b/c she is one doesn't mean she can't wear make-up or care about her hair etc.
Now, I am not a lesbian so if anyone on this board who is a lesbian feels differently, I'm sorry, that is just what irked me from my outside perspective.

I actually came across the tape of her last show (I was looking for a tape to tape the finale of "Project Runway").

I watched the opening number and how wonderfully exciting it was to watch her final salute to Broadway.
