Posted: 1/5/07 at 2:47ami'm hearing that spring awakening is a fabulous musical but i am going to be in the city with my parents tomorrow and as a 19 yr old was wondering if it would be really awkward to see the show with them?

Posted: 1/5/07 at 2:55amIt depends on your parents. There's strong sexual content & a sex scene with partial nudity. I guess it's the equivalent of seeing a rated R movie. If you're parents can handle that then take them... mine probably couldn't.

Posted: 1/5/07 at 3:15amIts according on how liberal they are, if they are really liberal take them if they are conservative, don't

Posted: 1/5/07 at 8:26amyea i agree with the top two posts. i already warned my mom because i am getting tickets with her, and she doesnt care. just let them know before hand what they are getting themselves into. and your 19 your old enough to understand whats going on, they shouldnt have a problem but then again i know a lot of people that wont let their kids see RENT.

Posted: 1/5/07 at 11:35amI saw it with my dad. He liked it. It wasn't awkward.

Posted: 1/5/07 at 11:52amI agree. It does depends on your parents. BUT, if your parents enjoy most musicals they will enjoy this show. It is not that awkward.

I saw it with a friend, and I'd feel awkward with my parents. The sex scene was not too intense for me, but I wouldn't want to sit next to them and watch it. Plus, the masturbation scene, etc...
It's a wonderful wonderful wonderful show, but still.

I think it COMPLETELY depends on your parents. I personally WANT to take my mom to it, because I think she'd really like it, but my mom is extremely, extremely easy-going about explicitness and stuff
(heck, she was playing me Stephen Lynch comedy when I was 11 or 12 years old! *g*) Basically, if your parents are open minded and wouldnt get totally wierded out by a sex scene, I say go for it! Granted I think teens really can get the most from it simply because all the issues in the show are very much teen issues that they can relate to, but the right adult would def love it too. So,it just depends!
and for the record, I'm nooot so sure I'd be COMPLETELY comfortable seeing it with my dad
he's not conservative at ALL and is totally open to stuff, but its just... I dont know, I think he tends to get more squirmy when it comes to explicitly sexual stuff than my mom haha. I think he'd just be kind of embarrased to be watching someone masturbate with me lolol

A few thinks to remember:
-parents have never masterbated;
-or had sex;
-or listened to rock and roll with explicit lyrics;
-or stayed out all night drinking and listening to R&R with explicit lyrics;
-or smoked pot while staying out all night drinking and listening to R&R with explicit lyrics;
-NOT.
I am your parents' age and just who do you think were on the ramparts of the social upheavals and sexual revolution anyway?
You may think your parents have never been exposed to content like Spring Awakening, but if they were in college after 1967ish, I have one word to say.
"HA!"
Have a blast.

Posted: 1/5/07 at 2:44pmIf you aren't sure, I'd suggest telling your parents about it ahead of time, so they are aware of it. When my mom told me she was thinking of getting tickets, I told her how explict it was, and she bought tickets anyway. So when we saw the show together, I didn't feel akward at all during the explict scenes, because I told her this was coming. As it turned out, she loved the show and can't stop playing the cast recording in the car!

WOSQ- no one is saying that parents havent done anything like that, and you sound like your awesome but there are PLENTY of parents that like to keep their children "innocent" i work with kids and some hardly get punished because their parents dont want them to get sad or cry. so i can see why some teenagers might be a little apprehensive bringing their parents to see a show like that. And some teenagers just really dont know what their parents think about things like that because they dont ask. i know i am taking my mom, i mean im in my twenties, but i know how my mom feels about sexuality, and abortion and abuse and whatnot. So please dont take any offense ok?
I always use to think my mom had no idea about sex and hard issues, but when i got older i found out she knew more than i did hehe.

Posted: 1/5/07 at 5:12pmIt really depends on the parents. I felt awkward when I saw I Love You You're Perfect Now Change with my mom. It'd be good to let them know about the content beforehand.

I also want to mention it doesn't matter how "liberal" your parents are at all. I think it all depends on your relationship with them. I grew up watching Sex and the City with my parents so the content in this show would not be uncomfortable for me to watch with them.
And WOSQ... It isn't that parents haven't done this or anything, the question was would you feel awkward with your parents being there. It all depends on the relationship you have with your parents.
#16re: spring awakening...too awkward to see with parents?
Posted: 1/5/07 at 5:56pmAnother question is if this is a show your parents would go to see even without you? They may or may not like a show with this content and may or may not feel awkward seeing it with you. So knowing what your parents like plays into the decision I think.

Posted: 1/6/07 at 1:13pmIt depends on your relationship with your parents. I'd feel awkward watching it with my parents, but that's because they aren't that open towards me when talking about sex.

Posted: 1/6/07 at 5:17pmI've heard people tell parents not to take their kids/teens to see Chorus Line and Avenue Q, saying they border on pornographic. I'm not kidding. So it really depends on the parent's background and their openness with their kids.

Posted: 1/6/07 at 5:54pmI believe it entirely depends on your relationship with your parents. My parents aren't very liberal but they are both very open-minded and I have never had a problem watching anything with nudity (stage or in a movie/on television) while they are watching as well. However I have friends whose parents would never be able to sit through a piece like this, making it very awkward. I also believe that it is probably a good thing to tell them what to expect before hand, regardless of your relationship.

Of course parents have done all of those things. That's not the question. The question is if a child would FEEL AWKWARD watching those things WITH their parents.
Just because they've done the same things does not necessarily lessen the awkwardness of watching it with them.
