spring awakening is a very well written musical
but i doubt it to be the best or greatest musical.
maybe to some teens today that have seen the show to them yes
but to all of the true theatre fans i think we could all say the classics are the best musicals...

Well, it's a well-written play that was made into a musical..
Actually I don't even like the play...

"The... Amish version of RENT? I'm retiring to a cave in the mountains for a year so I can figure that one out."
1) Rent: it has the same crappy '90s-sounding generic rock opera sound;
2) Amish: the costumes (maybe not really that Amish-looking, but the braids certainly were).
Now, what will you do with the rest of that year? You have 364 days, 23 hours, and 59 minutes left.

Posted: 6/11/07 at 7:09amI just don't get you Spring Awakening haters at all! It WAS the best musical of this past season, and there isn't even a close second! (o.k., must admit, I didn't love Grey Gardens; I enjoyed Curtains very much, and had mixed feelings about Mary Poppins, which needed a more charismatic star in the lead role) - Spring Awakening was the best experience I had in the theatre this past season. I wonder if people are jealous? of youth? or upset that it is non-traditional (you know, the rock score thing!)? Hmmm... so much vitriol for a wonderful show makes me really wonder...

To think that a show with no sets per-say, minimal costumes, a bunch of un-combed kids stomping their feet (choreography?) singing such moving award winning lyrics like "Blah, blah, blah, blah." wins the Tony for Best Musical (among others) is a sad, sad statement about what Broadway is becoming. I am so disappointed in the Tony comittee for even thinking SA deserves all that recognition. Broadway ain't what it use to be.. Sad.

Posted: 6/11/07 at 9:41amThe greatest musical ever???? Are you serious? I'll give you that it's a landmark show that's forever going to change the way people view musical theater, but it is in no way the greatest musical ever. The music can't stand up to anything that Stephen Sondheim, Alan Menken, Cy Coleman, Kander and Ebb, Rogers and Hammerstein, Jerome Kern, Boublil and Schonberg, etc I think you get my drift) has written. It's a very important show, but as far as musical theater goes, it does not stnad up against countless others.

I wonder if people are jealous? of youth?
Yepp, that's certainly why this 14-year-old thought Grey Gardens should win. I'm so damn jealous of their youth.
