I am going to get mine tomorrow. Right after I go to Lincoln Center library to look up all the songs that everyone has recommended for us to close our cabaret with.

re: who will be the first to get The Light in the Piazza recording?#4
Posted: 5/24/05 at 2:57amI picked it up at 8:00 last evening (Monday). There were legal stipulations with Virgin that wouldn't allow them to release it any earlier than midnight. However, I couldn't wait any longer so I splurged the money at Colony. Haven't stopped listening since. One of the most captivating cast albums in years. Captures the performances of the principals in glorious voice, providing enough dialogue and underscoring for a complete listening experience. It also presents those glorious orchestrations - such sublime charts - as well as the complete overture, which they apparently spliced in half for the Broadway run. Definitely a favorite cast album of mine.

lvpblues, I'm so glad you like the recording. I can't wait to get mine. The show has some of the most beautiful music I've heard on Broadway in a very long time, and the cast are amazing. I'm only going on sound clips I've heard, and can't wait to see it. It better win best music at the tony's.

Mary P x, you have no idea how obsessed with this show I've become. I had the fortunate privilege of attending the opening night performance and was completely blown away by the experience. Really such a beautiful, poignant and romantic show. Vicki Clark is absolutely astounding - and I'm rooting for her to win the Tony. Her performance of "Fable" at the Drama Desk awards the other evening was absolutely beautiful and so marvelously acted. The rest of the cast is incredible as well. I look forward to reading your reactions when you do see it!
By the way, the original cast recording of "Mary Poppins" didn't leave my player for over a week when I got it. Such a marvelous show and recording. I look forward to seeing that one myself. Love the name.

I don't really know anything about this show...but this board is convincing me to give it a shot. As far as music style (as compares to other shows) I get the feeling it's a little more in line with Les Mis than a more traditional musical like (first one that came to mind) Fiddler. Based on the existence of that discussion on other threads....here's my question:
If I get the cast recording, do the songs tell me what's going on, or will I need to do some extra research on the plot (i.e. ask those of you who love the show!) for guidance?

The show is far from the Les Miz/pop opera vein - the roles are written for legit voices (how many other shows boast four principal soprano roles?). The music is by Adam Guettel, who is unique in style and complex in structure as a composer. Anyone who's heard his other work will agree. There have been many on-going debates going on about the show - particularly with it receiving almost every reaction one could think of (though most people I know who've seen it are captivated). I personally feel that it's in a class of its own. The only show that I have noticed people comparing it to is "A Little Night Music," which I can sort of see, but still hold reservations in passing such a judgment. Personally, I find the music incredibly accessible. For me, I got it on the first complete listen at the opening night performance. The joy of the cast recording is definitely finding the nuances and subtle brilliance in the score. (And I cannot comment on the gorgeous orchestrations enough).
Also, the show is a beautifully integrated musical. The songs stem from the characters and you definitely get an idea of what's going on. I do recommend seeing it for the full effect: the actors and the performances along with the orchestration matched with the gorgeous scenography makes for a rather beautiful evening at the Beaumont.
I hope I helped somewhat, musicnmath. Go see it while you have the chance!

musicnmath, you probably won't need to research much of the plot because the plot is fairly basic, except you probably won't be able to discern the reason that Victoria Clark's character (Margaret, the mother) is so reluctant to let Clara go, since they try to wait awhile in the show to reveal it and I'm pretty sure it's not said in the music. But I think even looking at a couple reviews may give you enough information.
You really should give it a shot. The show left me speechless (I saw Adam Guettel outside the theatre but was too dumbstruck to congratulate him). It's a must-see and if you can't see it, the CD is a must-have. I would elaborate, but I think lvpblues spoke for all of us :)

lvpblues and pinguin -- Thanks! Your comments were very helpful. Especially regrading the legit voices -- I had no idea it didn't have a musical theatre sound (on a spectrum where Brooklyn occupies the other end). What diversity Broadway has seen in the new musicals category this year!
I will definitely give it a listen. I am in Boston, so I'm hoping to make the trek down to see the show live! I so enjoy discovering new shows to love (and drive my roommates nuts with

I will be in Lincoln Center on the 7th. If I can't make it to a music store before that, hopefully I can get it then.

It'll be even better since I will have all the music memorized by then! I plan on listening to this recording non stop for days.

Posted: 5/24/05 at 12:04pmjust wondering for those who have it already, if it comes with the lyrics? and what about for the italian songs? I know someone wanted a translation but I couldnt remember all the lyrics to explain them in english.

The CD is beautifully packaged like other Nonesuch cast recordings - CD, thick booklet in a cardboard slip-case. Though this one is remarkably more beautiful than others to look at with the beautiful golden-yellow color and silhouette of Clara - I have to agree with those who find it more attractive than the logo. Then again, I'm biased, but I honestly think the album itself is beautiful to look at...lol!
It comes with a book with some wonderful color photos of the cast, an essay by Frank Rich and complete lyrics. "Il Mondo Era Vuoto" is the only Italian translated into English (as it says in the booklet: for reference only). And its even more enlightening to those who do not know the language as the English lyrics are incredibly beautiful.

Posted: 5/24/05 at 12:18pmI'm actually sitting in a Barnes and Noble right now, fuming that they don't have it, nor do any of their other stores in the area. I can't seem to figure out if Borders or any other chains got it or not. I've been waiting years for this -- literally ever since the day I finished listening to Floyd Collins for the first time. Why put me through this now??

good, im glad they included that!
I suppose the italian in Aiutami didnt need translating because half way through the song it changes to an explanation anyway.

Posted: 5/24/05 at 1:14pmThenardier, I agree completely. It's nice for Broadway to have its own original Italian aria. One of the things that struck me about the show is that the prior knowledge of Italian wasn't necessary to understand what was going on. I also love Fabrizio's musical arc. His first song is completely in Italian and throughout the musical, his songs are interspersed with more and more English till finally his last song is entirely in English - and what a beautiful song. Stunning.

i know you dont need to know italian to understand the song but people were curious as to the specifics so i was going to try to translate a bit if the booklet didnt...
i suppose I will be picking up my copy on Thursday unless my mom picks it up on her way home from work.
