So a good friend of mine knew that I was a fan of the TV show so she was nice enough to invite me to this afternoon's reading of Smash for Broadway, scheduled to open in the spring of 2025. All I can saw is wow.
A few things to understand from the outset. The show is based on the TV series, but by no means is it a carbon copy. There are a myriad of unexpected twists and turns, so it departs significantly from what you might expect. Next, it's primarily a comedy, and it's jam packed from start to finish with laugh out loud jokes, delivered perfectly. And EVERYONE in the packed space was laughing. And finally, they use several of Mark Shaiman's songs from the show, but there are many new songs as well, written by him and Scott Wittman.
No one knows (well, maybe some people know) the extent to which the cast will change over the next 18 months, but this cast of about 10 principals and 10 ensemble members was terrific. Special kudos to Robyn Hurder, Brooks Ashmanskas and Karrry Butler, but the performer who absolutely bought down the house was Bonnie Milligan, in a role that seemed written just for her. There are Tony awards to be reaped here, for sure.
