re: Pics of Ethel in Gypsy?
 Apr 18 2008, 12:28:41 PM
"Is there any footage of Ethel in Gypsy, Anyone Know?"

No, the only chance we would have to see Ethel as Mamma Rose is if she did the movie. She doesn't even perform Rose's Turn in concerts which I think is a mistake and she should've but that is ok.

ETHEL MERMAN, ETHEL MERMAN, ETHEL MERMAN, ETHEL MERMAN and Some MORE MERMAN!!!!!!! Why has only a few people mentioned her?? She made the role happen, she made people cry, she made history! I am sure a lot of other people who played the role made people cry but not like Miss Ethel did.

I new it all along. I don't even thing Angela Landsbury could do the show any justice. All the ladies who do this show should take in mind that they have some mighty big shoes to fill. The only person who did the show and made the critics spin in their seats was the legendary Ethel Merman. I think it should definitly stay that way!!!

Here you go I just found this on YouTube. It is Elaine Stritch Ethel Merman's understudy for Call Me Madam. She tells the "Just go to New Haven and sing the f**king song, ELAINE!!". I laughed for about 10 minutes....She is hysterical in this clip....oh my it is so funny!

I was at the 66' revival. Absoulutley WONDERFULL!!! She never looked better and sounded fabulous. I treasure that moment for the rest of my life. I saw all of the revivals every where she went.

The number that made me shake was Roses Turn from Gypsy 1959, Ethel Merman delivered that song with such finess and her voice was absoulutly faboulus. What a good way to end a incredible show! My favorite song to this day.

That is very good. Your family new her in the theatre and my family new her at the Salon. I only saw her performances in The Annie Get Your Gun Revival at The Lincoln Center and every single one of her concerts including Mary Martin Ethel Merman together on broadway after the Annie Get Your Gun Revival. I was talking about PalJoey (I dont like him very much) who probably doesn't even know her. I know several people who were good friends with Ethel and had family in her short roles and escorts as

Why dont we call a theatre after her? Well the Imperial, The Garden, and majestic have definitely been around way to long to rename them. Plus Ethel Merman opened a lot of shows in them so I dont think renaming them after her would be a good Idea. But if we built another theatre in NY we could possibly say something....

Unlikely, so if your Ethel's biggest fan and I am her biggest fan I guess we will both have to get in line, right? Or wait you are probably going to reply back:

Ethel: back off bitch, PalJoey was here first. Shut Up and let me love you more and tell callmemadam1953 she can go **** herself!

Who the hell are you guys to tell me to get in line! You need to get in the goddamn line. I do know though that you PalJoey are the biggest asshole I have encountered on here and dont give a

Very Funny, for your information 3 women in My family new Ethel very well. My Great Grandmother and her sister did her hair and nails in the 50s when she moved out here to Colorado with Bob Six. My grandfather new Bob Six who was married to Ethel. My grandfather worked at Coors and was really good friends with The Coors president....Guess who he knew, Well of course he knew Ethel Merman. Miss Merman was at many parties my grand parents went to that he hosted. They new her very well. My Great Great Grandma was one of the hairdressers on the set of Kid Millions in 1934 as well as Top is the limit. In 1979 I had the pleasure of meeting the broad in New York. When I was passing a restruant Ethel was coming out of the door and I asked for an autograph (nice, funny lady). I have many archives of Ethel's autographs from the 50s when she played the Ampitheatre In Colorado and photographs that my grandma had. So you may call me stupid but I bet you or anyone else for that fact doesnt have a couple generations of family who personally new Ethel. And for all the fact meeting Ethel changed my life theatre wise I have never been so devoted to a person in my life. Even my 6 husbands. After that meeting I tried to see all Ethel's final performances from about 77-82. I even saw her all the time when I hadn't even met her yet. As a teenager I could not get enough of the women, I still love her to death and love to pass the stories that my grandparents and back some more passed down to me for my nieces and nephews. As far as my birthday goes I was born Jan 16th too. what a small world. So if you want to add any more smart ass comments PalJoey? I would think twice before lighting another fire. And as for you philcrosby I respect a lot of your posts reply's on Miss Merman Just an FYI. Anybody else like to go ape **** on me?

No she was born January 16, 1908. My birthday is on her birthday. Her cenntenial was anounced on Broadway's Best. And well of course I am Ethel's biggest fan and I know everything about her so I was guessing it had to be around the 25th.

Personally, you dont have to like the lady but atleast give her your respect. As well as some other stars, she paid her dues.

Today. February 25, 2008 marks The Ethel Merman Cenntenial. 100 Years of completion on the Broadway Stage and she still remains the queen of Broadway.

Everyone else in these posts needs to pull their heads out of their asses and get with the picture. Seriously Melanie Griffith????? Ethel Merman is the Queen of broadway, hands down, no questions asked! You find me somebody who has been in more than 13 broadway shows, introduced more than 25 songs on the broadway and Americana music. I highly doubt it is Patti LuPone. Merman may have not been the prettiest face on broadway but her voice was enough to hid that fact.
Runner up to Merman would

My favorite Broadway songs...ha! There are way to many to list but anything that Ethel Merman ever sang always gets me up and ready for action. (except her disco album!) an FYI this album was not the greatest. I highly recommend There's No Business Like Show Business: Merman's Greatest Hits or The Gypsy Recording Original Cast. Those are good starters.

OMG!! I know that is my favorite movie. She is really GOOD in that movie. What a cast.
As she would always say at the opening night gala in Hollywood
Here She Is Boys! Merman Flops!
(holding a picture of her turned over in the trash can with her bloomers showing) lol!

re: Ethel Merman Quotes

If I am thinking of the same thing you are. I highly doubt that that ever happened. Ethel Merman was way to professional to do a a thing like that. If she wanted a thing like that all she would have to do was go down to the El Morocco.
