I think it’s homophobic, offensive to British culture, vulgar and low class.

Wasn't it opening night?  I would think the Bowl would do good numbers on opening night.

I actually saw Buble and Erivo on opening night, I think it was last year, and it was pretty packed too.

Suffice it to say, he's not my favorite when it comes to vocals.  Not bad,

And if it's RZ playing Maria, I'm sure the final scene will be her taking the kids and telling Georg, 'We don't need you, you man!'  And then heading off the stage and over the mountains with the kids while he stands there, covered in sauerkraut.

Yes, because if anything is wrong with Broadway right now, it's that it's too weird and full of passion projects instead of attempts at mass appeal.

Agreed.

We've seen several people talk about what a great season this was for musicals.  And yet as soon as these musicals

Have You Left at Intermission?

Only once. Urinetown.
Looking at the faces of my friends at intermission we all knew we were just going to go out and have an earlier dinner than planned.
Got the message, and what it was trying to do, but just didn’t care.
Didn’t resonate for us on any level really.

But Shigeta was a victim of racist times when Asian-Americans were not treated equally in the movies. In the '50s, you still had ''yellowface,'' where Marlon Brando played Sakini, an Okinawan,in ''The Teahouse of the August Moon,'' and John Wayne played Genghis Khan in ''The Conqueror.'' Heck, even in 1961, the same year that ''Flower Drum Song'' came out, Mickey Rooneyplayed the offensive, buck-toothed Japanese neighbor in ''Breakfast at Tiffany's.''

Hollywood was fine with pairing a pretty Asian woman, like Nancy Kwan, with a Caucasian leading man, but it was rare to see an Asian leading man ''get'' the Caucasian girl (even though Shigeta did so in the groundbreaking and obscure''The Crimson Kimono,'' a 1959 detective story with an interracial love triangle). For more context, let's not forget that interracial couples were not legal until 1967's Loving v. Virginia decision by the Supreme Court.

Finally, though Shigeta was all-American and served in the Hawaii National Guard Marine Corps, his film heyday of the early '60s, found the Japanese-American star sandwiched between post-World War II and the Vietnam War at a time when a Hollywood hunkwho ''looked like the enemy,'' didn't have too many opportunities on the silver screen. Below, here is Shigeta, in all his good-looking glory, singing gloriously ''You Are Beautiful'' from ''Flower Drum Song'' ...

A definite heartthrob!

I remember watching FDS with my parents and my dad commenting on his service.

My dad also remembered growing up in Southern California during the war and seeing a few of his Japanese friends and their families impacted by the internment camps.  Something that my dad, who would later become a Marine pilot and was very patriotic, was very saddened by.  Seeing friends having to go through that.  Knowing they were true blue Americans themselves.

Of course, he also talked about how German Americans were treated as well.  My best friend's mom's maiden name was the same as one of the Nazi leaders in Germany at the time and she said her family caught all sorts of hell too.  Harsh, messy times.

He was so cute.
As was his older brother played by James Shigeta.
Did it get any better than James Shigeta?
He was great in the movie too.

Such a beautiful and classy lady.  To this day.

Thanks for sharing.  I think that Flower Drum Song is still my favorite R&H musical.  Some truly beautiful music with a story to tell.

I loved seeing Jose and Lea in the revival, but I wish they had just kept it more aligned with the original. In all its color, flashiness and humor.

It would be outdated by today's standards, I know, but it is still a lot of fun.   And the m

Broadway Flops you love that everybody else hates

Add me to the list of those who loved American Psycho, despite its having a limited shelf life on Broadway. It had an air of conceit, an attitude that almost said, ‘I dare you not to like me.’ Unfortunately the critics fell for it, and didn’t like it. This while I remember a strong percentage of people on this board at the time really liking it. I also liked the eerie sounds/music playing as you entered the theater to set the mood.
I also agree on Bright Star. Carm

How do you know it wasn’t a liberal audience member? Considering conservative politicians are way more supportive of Israel than liberal politicians are.
And Jesus was a Jew, and plenty of liberals blaspheme Him daily. As they do His father in that musical BoM.
Liberals find that hilarious. People in glass houses…

I do find it interesting that a show that has received glowing reviews, has a person starring in it who was part of a show (though it was on years ago) that was a darling of a certain generation of viewers wouldn't pull more audience members just on that.

I see how he isn't necessarily an A+ star, but still a generation of TV viewers would know who he is.

Again though that was quite a few years ago now, so I can see how a "small" musical, tho
