THE QUEEN OF VERSAILLES Previews
 Oct 31 2025, 03:48:45 PM

I am completely floored that they removed the part about publishing the diary.  I thought that was kind of the whole point of the show, that

Stage door fall 2025
 Oct 11 2025, 12:50:07 PM

I went to the first preview of The Queen of Versailles, and the stage door was the most chaotic stage door I have ever experienced, because there were multiple things going on at the same time, there were probably a couple hundred fans crowded together (the barricades were set up vertically rather than horizontally in relation to the sidewalk, if you know what I mean, so the front row of the barricades was short and people were kind of pressed together to be closer to the front), an

In this case, I can understand why investors are frustrated.  Within a couple of weeks of Billy Porter and Marisha Wallace starting, it was clear that they weren't going to increase the box office enough to have any breakeven weeks between that point and the end of their run two months later.  Billy Porter being out made it worse, but even if he had stayed, the fiscally responsible thing to have done would have been to close the show by Labor Day at the latest.

Yet Another Scary Case of Fan Foolery

Sadly, there are a lot of people like this stalker.  It sounds like McDonald is staying close enough that she probably walked to the hotel, but I'm guessing she's going to start getting into a car to be driven a couple of blocks to make it harder to be followed.  She shouldn't have to do something like that, but there are other stalkers.

I may be misremembering, but I believe Gypsy is the first Broadway show McDonald has done where she hasn't do

SUNSET BLVD. Revival
 Jun 8 2025, 02:24:04 PM

I bought a ticket a few days ago, and the same thing happened where the transaction just would not go through.  I called and had no problems.  The very nice person on the phone said she hadn't heard of there being a widespread issue, but the wait to talk to someone was pretty long, so I wonder if there had been something happening that's happening intermittently again.

Drama Desk nominations '25
 Jun 1 2025, 09:10:05 PM

Last year, 8 of the 10 acting winners were women.  Let's see how it all shakes out this year.  Based on who is likely to win, I think the acting winners will be fairly evenly split by gender in the end.

Denzel Washington to return to Broadway in OTHELLO?
 Sep 6 2024, 11:48:30 AM

I think some of the premium center orchestra tickets were held back, but otherwise, I believe all of the orchestra was on sale today except for the last couple of seats on the sides, which I imagine will be held back until they know how obstructed the view is from those seats.  So I don't think there will be cheaper options available next week.  If anything, prices will be higher.  Dynamic pricing happened just in the first 90 minutes of the pre-sale today, where some ticke

2024 Tony Awards

The opening number was really weird.  It didn't sound or look "Broadway" at all.

In Hell's Kitchen, I'm pretty sure the actors drumming on stage aren't actually drumming.  It was weird they did a close-up there to emphasize that the drumming sound was coming from someplace else.

Jay-Z and Alicia Keys haven't performed that song together for probably 13 or 14 years.  That part was fantastic and sold a lot of tickets, but the audience m

sytwix, thank you for the heads-up about tickets being released for this weekend!  I was able to snag one.  The prices for the extension are crazy ($164 is the cheapest non-rush non-cancellation ticket, with the rest being $204!)

2024 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album Nominees predictions
 Nov 10 2023, 01:56:11 PM

The rules for principal vocalists change quite a bit pretty often, but the current rule is that there can be no more than four principal vocalists.  They are designated on the entry form as those with "significant contributing performance(s), defined as a lead performance by a featured vocalist."  The winning principal vocalists get a statuette and are considered to be Grammy winners.  If there are no principal vocalists, then it's considered to be an "ensemb

steve.sometime and justanothernewyorker, thank you for the info about the lottery!  It's kind of odd that they do it some days and not others, but I guess it's better than not doing it at all!  Hopefully the lack of lottery availability means that the show is selling a bit better.

Should the digital lottery be open right now?  I'm at rush.telecharge.com , and I see plenty of shows but I don't see Here Lies Love at all.  Also, when you sign up for the lottery, do you get to choose standing vs not standing, or is it assigned to you?

BETWEEN RIVERSIDE & CRAZY Reviews
 Feb 5 2023, 08:34:17 AM

For the performance I want to see Between Riverside and Crazy, the only options are the last seat against the wall in the orchestra, which are labeled as "partial view."  Is it better to sit in house left or house right?  I think around 15-20% of the relevant side of the stage is cut off, and I don't know if any significant scenes happen in that area on either side.  Thank you in advance!

AUGUST WILSON'S THE PIANO LESSON Reviews
 Jan 10 2023, 11:11:23 AM

ACL2006, do you mean that he is out through the MLK weekend, or just for a performance or two?  This was originally the last week of the run before it got extended, so it would be odd timing for a lengthy planned absence.  I was thinking about going this upcoming weekend.  There are photos on BWW of him at a gala yesterday, and I assume he wouldn't have gone if he had COVID or some other illness.

BCEFA FLEA MARKET 2022 COLLECTORS UNITE!!
 Sep 26 2022, 11:27:36 AM

I think the combination of Rosh Hashanah and the iffy weather made the in-person turnout lower, which was a good thing considering the scaffolding made it really hard to get close to a lot of the tables (and created the pushing and shoving issue -- which, believe it or not, was much much better than usual).

The auction prices seemed as high as usual, except that a lot more items were won by people on the phone or the Internet.  And anything to do with Phantom or Sondheim wen

Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 7/24/22
 Jul 27 2022, 08:24:31 AM

In terms of the question about plays towards the end of the summer, over the past 15 years or so, Broadway has become increasingly star-driven in terms of plays, and those stars generally aren't around for all that long.  Harry Potter is rare in being a recent multi-year play.   Aside from Harry Potter, there have been a number of years where there are zero plays or one play running as of Labor Day.

NOTRE DAME DE PARIS in New York
 Jul 3 2022, 01:53:52 PM

In a weird coincidence, Les Dix Commandements (The Ten Commandments), which came out in 2000 and was the next big French musical after Notre Dame de Paris, also had its New York debut a couple of months ago.  I'm not sure what the history and tradition of the French stage musical tradition are, but both shows seem like they are staged very similarly -- relatively bare stage, lots of ensemble dancing around in similar costumes, much more of an emphasis on lighting than set or costume
