Just a comment on the age of Sally, in Goodbye to Berlin (the novel Cabaret is based on), Sally Bowles is 19 but looks 25 because of the way life has treated her already. Yes, the musical alters the story and character quite a bit, but I think the actress playing Sally should be in her 20s. I saw JCS when it was in Stratford, and in my opinion it really is fantastic. I'm not a huge fan of the show itself (I prefer a musical to have actual dialogue scenes, but to each their own), but I thoroughly enjoyed this production. The second act in particular is very well done, and I found the final moments of the show to be breathtaking. That's interesting, artscallion, I'd never heard that before. That does make sense and clears up a bit of the issue with the Baker, so I can definitely believe that. I am going to be obnoxious though and stick to my guns not with the specific age, but with the idea of her being younger than the "adults" and older than the "kids", around mid-late teens, to me, seems right.

It did strike me as odd watching it yesterday, and I'll admit I only made the age connection with the Baker yesterday (and I've been in the show...oops). I do like the idea of Rapunzel being younger. I saw this show the last week of August and adored it. As a dancer, I particularly loved the female ensemble, the choreography was fantastic. All the leads were on the top of their game, and I was lucky enough to see Alex Ellis as Brenda, and I hope that this leads to big things for her. I'm very sad to see this show go, it was a truly fun, entertaining theatrical experience.

Saw the show last Thursday (the 25th) with Tari Kelly and Kelly Bishop, and I adored them both. littlegreen2, as much as I disagree with most of your opinions, I have to thank you for calling out Emma Hunton's performance. Next to Normal is in Toronto right now, and everyone I know who's gone is saying she stole the show, when I found her to have moments that were great, but overall she was VERY overdone. Too much angst, too weepy...I lost the realness of the character.

From what I've seen live, Alice Ripley in Next to Normal takes the cake, with Bernadette Peters in A Little Night Music coming in a close second. Now, if I had been fortunate enough to see Raul Esparza in Company live, I'm sure that he would be my number one, because from my many viewings of the dvd, he's already up there.

I am so glad I got to see this video, but I'm still going to say that I prefer Raul Esparza's rendition (which I had the privelege of seeing live just this last weekend, it still is in my mind). John Raitt's voice is spectacular, and I agree that one would be hard-pressed to find a voice to match in caliber among today's crop of leading men, however it's the acting that it comes down to for me, and Raul just brings so much to the song acting wise in addition to vocally.

Another vote for Walsh. While I've only seen LuPone and Walsh (neither live, unfortunately, Walsh on the DVD, LuPone in the screening), I chose Walsh because she was with it the whole show, every time I looked at her, she was Joanne. Her voice suited the role perfectly, in both her big solos and just her lines in full cast numbers. Yes, LuPone's "Ladies Who Lunch" was very good, I felt that she was just waiting for her big moment during everything up until that point.

I really wanted to go (as a participant), but I'm going to New York in August (so I can see Follies), and we couldn't swing it to go twice in one summer(I'm from Toronto, so it's a bit of a hike). I saw Raul in the "Very, Very Best of Broadway" concert last night in Toronto, and it made me even more upset I wasn't going.

It would have been interesting to see Elizabeth Stanley in the role, she and Raul had such great chemistry in Company, but I don't know enough about this show to make a judgement on if she's right for the role.
