A Winter’s Tale is a mixed bag
The Distinctive Baritone said: "I am pretty sure Shakespeare co-wrote The Winter’s Tale with another playwright. Act IV in the very least must have been written by someone else because it’s like a totally different play all of the sudden. We know he co-wrote several other plays (his worst ones, interestingly). I like Winter’s Tale but if they are doing the whole thing uncut(3.5 hours???) that’s crazy."Most scholars would disagree with you. Act IV of The Winter's Tale is one of the best and st...
Why is Oedipus considered a revival?
Is there a single moment or even a snippet of text in Icke's Oedipus that could be considered translated or adapted from Sophocles? I don't believe they share any moments of overlap at all.
2026 Tony Awards Nominations!
Ragtime is many things, but "sophisticated" is a serious stretch. It's a sentimental puddle of a show.
Pulitzer Prize 2026
iluvtheatertrash said: "Would Cold War not be ineligible? Forgive me if I'm wrong but wasn't this a remount?"The play premiered in 2025 at Clubbed Thumb, which would theoretically make it eligible for the upcoming prize, which will award a 2025 play, if it was submitted after its Summerworks run.Reminder that a play text is only eligible if it was manually submitted to the Pulitzer committee, which is why some plays are eligible after their world premiere and some are only eligible after a Ne...
NYT: Can A.I. Match Molière’s Wit? These Researchers Think So.
What a disgusting and shameful article. A new low for the Times.
Broadway Journal: Public Theater rocked by layoffs
The Public is clearly struggling right now with poor artistic decisions and a staggering lack of morale among the staff. The "nobody's fault" attitude (like Ermengarde demonstrates) is precisely why so many non-profit theaters are walking blindfolded into bankruptcy.
NYT: It’s a Homophobic Slur. What’s It Doing in So Much Theater?
Prince F*ggot has been desperate for controversy since day one as a marketing tactic. I'm glad that nobody has taken the bait — this bland and noncommittal article is all that Harris and his band of pseudo-provocateurs deserve.
NYT: The Broadway Musical Is in Trouble
Just in Time was budgeted at $11.5 million. I don't know if they went over budget, but if not, it's insane that Death Becomes Her cost three times as much given that both shows look slick and professional. Perhaps it's not just a matter of rising costs, but of irresponsible usage of funds. Are out-of-town tryouts worth the millions of added expense if you're only going to change a line or two of dialogue and a few costumes? This article skips over the importance of the $3 million tax credit on...
Encores! 2026 Update?
Bat Boy and Kerry Butler have a long history together. I think she'll do a great job, and I'm glad to see she's still attached to the show all these years later.
Jonathan Groff in Just In Time
If there's one show in town that's worth premium prices, it's this one.
FLOYD COLLINS Reviews
I also returned to this in its closing week and thought it grew deeply moving. And if nothing else, it's the best sounding musical on Broadway in a decade at least.

2025 Pulitzer Prize Predictions
QueenAlice is correct here. Plays, unlike novels, are not automatically published and available as written texts. In order for the Pulitzer committee to consider the play, they need to receive a manual submission to review, which happens once the playwright decides the work is finished. Consider Sweat, which premiered in 2015 in Oregon but wasn't submitted to the Pulitzers until after the 2016 Public Theatre production, eventually winning the 2017 prize.
Adam Guettel & Bob Martin's MILLIONS will premiere at Alliance Theatre in Spring 2025, directed by Bartlett Sher
Stunning tracks released, as expected. Guettel is really on a whole different level from everyone else working today.
2025 Outer Critics Circle Award Nominations
Of the ten shows nominated for their direction, only one of them was off-Broadway, and even that was a multi-million dollar spectacle. Isn't the point of this voting body to highlight work that would otherwise go unrecognized? There was some great small-scale direction this season from artists like Eric Ting or Raja Feather Kelly that would have been well-suited for acknowledgement from this organization.
2025 Pulitzer Prize Predictions
2024 was a pretty sparse calendar year for new plays. 2025 already has way more interesting contenders for next year's prize. I do think John Proctor is the Villain is eligible this year due to the Huntington production. Purpose had quite a few revisions between Chicago and Broadway so I'm skeptical they submitted it for consideration this year, but you never know. What else would be a contender? The Ally? Catarina and the Beauty of Killing Fascists? Sally & Tom? Grief Hotel? Little Bear Ridg...
"The Cherry Orchard" at St. Ann's Warehouse
I don't usually like to comment on something if I don't have anything nice to say, but I thought this was completely abysmal. I have never seen a worse Chekhov production in my entire life, including community theatre productions where the actors didn't know their lines.
OH MARY! Replacement Casting Thread
Bettyboy72 said: "My only complaint was I was seated next to a cackling queen. This seems to be a complaint I’ve heard from people attending this show. A superfan who was jumping on Betty’s lines with a bellowing cackle, gasping and screaming. The gay couple in front of him kept jumping from his shrieking. Afterward, several of us seated around him commiserated. We didn’t know what to say because how do you tell someone to stop laughing at a comedy. Loud cackling laughers are the worst. I don...
Wine in the Wilderness at Classic Stage Co.
Thought this was very good, especially as a time capsule of where certain conversations were at in 1969. The cast is great, and I don't think I've ever seen a show at CSC that so many people so audibly enjoyed.I agree Wedding Band was by far the best of the three Childress plays recently produced, but I would personally rank this above the somewhat unfocused Broadway Trouble in Mind production.
