Something that not a lot of people are pointing out is the way she talks about 1776 as being a museum piece— Does everyone involved just hate the source material?? I can’t stand it being written off as some dusty thing about how all the Founding Fathers are perfect. Its progressive! It was banned at the White House! It was pretty explicitly written to call into question the ideas of American exceptionalism during the Vietnam War and Civil Rights movement!!

Not surprising. I’ve worked at Clements before and EVERY show has trouble selling there, no matter what it is or who is in it— which is kind of a shame, because even though it’s a small house I do think it’s a pretty alright venue (at least compared to some of the other Midtown off-Broadway theaters).

I tend not to get anything special, so I never go into the Flea Makret expecting much. Picked up paperbacks and Playbills mostly— my crown jewel though is a poster from the original Broadway production of Glengarry Glenn Ross signed by Joe Mantagnea, which somehow ended up in the $1 bin where the vendors must have missed the signature.

Agree with everyone on this thread— cancelling the first week of previews this late on is such a bizarre stunt. There’s definitely been a shift in cultural understanding since the beginning of the pandemic but this show has so obviously been a white savior story from the beginning—and people talked about it that way back in 2019-20, too, especially after Ari’el called out the production team for making him do a shoddy and inaccurate accent. As of right now, I’d have to go with Stoppard- though he has the benefit of being at the tail-end of his career, while other possible contenders for the title (like Nottage or Parks or Baker) have more than likely not, not reached the peak of their careers.

The vitriol that ‘Music Man’ gets has always baffled me. I can accept that the sanitized version of early-20th America might be a bit outdated, but I’ve seen so many people act like it’s the most offensive musical of all time. This might be controversial, but in my opinion, the actual threat to the development of new works on Broadway is the increased presence of mainstays like Wicked, Phantom, Chicago, and even relative newcomers like Evan Hansen, which will absolutely not be closing anytime...

Agreed, bettyboy72. The flea market was a nightmare pre-COVID and I’m sure it’s going to be a nightmare post-COVID; though I will be more than gladly attending this year. When I went in 2019 I held off on going until about 2 PM which really improved the experience... I wasn’t very interested in a lot of the hot-ticket items anyways, and if you’re there around closing then a lot of the vendors are more than happy to just give away some of their less-popular items.

I know that it was done fairly recently, but I would LOVE to see another Equus revival, with Timothee as Alan. And it would certainly sell a lot of tickets for... obvious reasons. “Male, he was in the mezzanine.”Is that the usher you had or the usher with the virus? I was there on the 4th. I had a woman in the left mezzanine.

According to the Playbill report, the usher was at the Booth the 3rd thru the 7th. Which would mean they worked there during my visit. They didn’t specify which section. It’s been a week and I don’t feel any symptoms, but I’m currently in the process of getting the **** off campus and quarantining myself for a few days at home.

Can anyone confirm what dates the usher worked? I was at the theater on Wednesday so I’m hoping I caught the show before said usher was in There.

I can’t recommend the No Script podcast enough! Two guys (and sometimes a guest) discuss a different play script each week. It’s insightful, but the conversations themselves are very informal, entertaining, and easy to follow.

Anyone seeing WAOVW tomorrow night? Im going Wednesday, its been a while since Ive seen a show so early in previews, so Im excited. Its also about the tenth production of this show Ive seen but the first on broadway... so Im very anxious to see this production of the play that got me into playwriting in the first place.

They’re gonna be selling rush/student tickets later right? Right? (Please say right).

SUPER excited for this, but also super hesitant. Wonder how they’re gonna treat a lot of the stuff like Allison’s narration and Edges of the World, how they’re gonna play out. I’m not sure how well those things could play on film.
