I think you can only successfully satirize identity politics when you have a rock solid and authentic identity yourself. But this show did not when I saw it. I enjoyed a lot of the humor, but kept waiting for the point. Avenue Q for instance has “Only for Now.” Oh Mary has the great day monologue. If this show could figure out its heart, I think it would have better chances of succeeding.

I didn’t see this in Chicago, but I LOVE the book. It’s perfect source material for a musical since so much of the story just sings in nature. That said, adapting it will absolutely need significant changes. The movie, for example, was horrible.From what I’ve read about this show, they are making exactly the type of changes necessary to get this into workable shape. ACL2006 said: "I do think Beetlejuice closes up early but still moves into the Barrymore."Weren't they working on rewrites for the transfer before this happened? Maybe they could add in some coronavirus jokes during the opening monologue for the new version. It is a "show about death" after all, and people will be needing the laugh.I wonder how Sophia Anne Caruso is feeling right now.
