Is there something going on with NWS that almost everything is closing in the next few months and nothing is being announced?

Usally happens. Rent is crazy there. It’s like Stage 42 nothing lasts.

Spelling Bee hasn't been doing well this summer. 50% houses or less.
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

I think the harsh truth is there's still not a sustainable Commercial Off-Broadway business model for musicals.
SPELLING BEE and HEATHERS have 499 seats to fill each night. That's A LOT of seats! As far as I can tell, not a single Off-Broadway musical in a 499-seater has recouped post-Covid. That's a 15-show sample size between 3 auditoriums (NWS 1&3 and Stage 42) and should be enough data to tell producers that this isn't the way.
Producers were probably given false hope by the length of runs for LITTLE SHOP (which recouped in large part due to the Covid-era Save Our Stages money) and TITANIQUE (which reportedly had cooked books). And both those shows are in houses with under 299 seats –– so in the case of Little Shop, they've been able to maintain a high-ish average ticket price by demand for the stars and the IP and scarcity of seats.

The Play That Goes Wrong seems to be doing well still. They have tickets on sale through January.

I was at spelling bee mid July and there were a lot of open seats. The digital rush has also been very easy for a while.

That’s so weird. Every time I try to do the digital rush, I get shut out, no matter the time.
