OH, MARY! Reviews Jun 28 2025, 09:33:20 AM
We've all done this before, but I have a free hour and let my brain wander.
People I think could play Mary
Women of SNL: Kate McKinnon, Cecily Strong, Kristen Wiig, Aidy Bryant
Issa Rae, Linda Cardellini, Melissa McCarthy, Martha Plimpton, Stephanie Hsu, D'Arcy Carden, Annie Murphy
Amy Seders, obvs
Matteo Lane, Joel Kim Booster, Bowen Yang, Dan Levy
Of course, few of these are realistic...but that's what dreams are for.

Rocky Horror Show Revival Cast Jan 29 2026, 09:11:00 AM
Great choices all around, but I'm particularly excited about Stephanie Hsu. She was my favorite part of Be More Chill, and I'm THRILLED that she's going to be back on Broadway.

Kad said: "The upside, of course, is that Mexodus would likely be the lowest-cost musical to hit Broadway in decades."
And is virtually guaranteed to win Best Musical. Unless The Lost Boys or Schmigadoon far exceeds expectations.

The Hell's Kitchen closing announcement timing is interesting. Though the Shubert would be a ginormous house for this show. Though Mexodus feels like one of the only shows that could still open in time for Tony noms with that quick of a turnaround.

BAT BOY : The Musical at NYCC Encores! Oct 31 2025, 11:44:50 AM
There are also some very significant structural changes to the show, particularly as it relates to the townspeople. These are post-London changes. But yes, they use "Mine All Mine".

The Public Theater - Ethan Lipton’s “The Seat of Our Pants” Oct 25 2025, 11:22:09 PM
I wasn't as sold on this as some of the other posters. I'm familiar with the source material and also really loved Lileana Blain-Cruz's LCT production.
The cast is doing some great work, and there are some excellent moments. But it took FOREVER to get through. I wanted every aspect of the show tightened and sped up. But perhaps I've just gotten too used to listening to podcasts at 1.5x speed.
I went in wondering why this

Oratorio for Living Things returns at Signature Oct 23 2025, 09:04:00 AM
I loved this at Ars Nova, and I loved it just as much at Signature. I'd been grappling with how to describe it to people, and I landed on "It's not musical theatre; it's theatrical music."
For anyone who hasn't seen it, I'd recommend to just sit back and let the experience wash over you. The first 5-10 minutes are fairly impenetrable lyrically, by design. But then once things open up (and the lyrics shift to predominantly Engl

L Morgan Lee to direct THE DROWSY CHAPERONE concert for Carnegie Hall. Cox, Newell, Van Ness and more to star. Oct 21 2025, 01:24:36 PM
Chiming in to add my praise to the event overall. Yes, it was a little sloppy, and the sound mixing was terrible throughout, but everyone was having a great time, and I did, too. And it is not lost on me how important it is to see a stage full of trans and nonbinary performers in a joyful piece of theatre right now.
My specific thoughts pretty much echo what's already been shared. Chris Renfro was the superstar of the evening. Alex Newell did what Alex Newell does to great effect. Laverne Cox was a far better comedic performer than I expected. Dylan Mulvaney was absolutely giving Ellen Greene. Peppermint was a hoot. I also want to shout out Gio Coppola and Futaba as the Gangsters, whose timing and chemistry was very impressive given how little time they had to rehearse.

Slam Frank: A New Musical Oct 20 2025, 08:48:48 AM
I also saw this yesterday and was really impressed by it. It's over the top satire, and it goes VERY dark towards the end. After 80 minutes of general laughter by the audience, there were some audible gasps during one particular sequence. Even I, who generally agrees with the point the show was making, was a little taken aback by precisely how the show was making it. But it worked for me, and it was consistent with the no holds barred nature of the rest of the show

10 Best Musicals of the 21st Century Sep 26 2025, 04:59:55 PM
Started with a shortlist of about 35 shows. Ultimately (and painfully) got it down to the following. It's some combination of shows I love, shows I respect, shows I think are important, and shows I think are measurably excellent, though the precise ratio of each of these varies by show.

PUNCH Previews Sep 25 2025, 02:13:25 PM
I saw yesterday's matinee. I agree with a lot of what's already been posted. Lots of easy nitpicking to be done here (which I'll do below), but overall I thought the show was successful and built around a phenomenal leading performance by Will Harrison.
The first act is too long. Could easily lose 10 minutes.
The second act is much more powerful and probably doesn't work as well without the frenetic nature of the first act.

Has potential. Needs a LOT of work. Pretty much everything I think has already been mentioned. One book thing that drove me nuts: Click Here To Toggle Spoiler Content I kept expecting there to be some connection between Sasha (Ebony's dead friend) and Ulysses's dad. The book is screaming that there's some big reveal. &nbs

Oratorio for Living Things returns at Signature Aug 5 2025, 10:23:45 PM
The earlier production was one of my favorite things I've seen in a LONG time.
Hoping this also results in a much-needed cast recording.

GINGER TWINSIES Previews? Jul 25 2025, 10:34:31 PM
I saw this tonight. It was dumb and fun, and I laughed a lot. That was all I was looking for, and that was all I got. Most of the jokes were cheap and expected, and I didn't care a whip.

JOY: Yes or no? Jul 18 2025, 10:13:05 PM
I saw this yesterday. Everything about this show is milquetoast save Betsy's performance -- and even then...she spent a lot of the show downstage, hand on hip, singing the **** out of mediocre songs.
The whole QVC sequence at the end of Act One gave me some hope for the show -- I laughed out loud as Joy floundered on camera and then eventually found her stage presence. It was great. |
