Was the 1974 revival of Candide a flop?

Feb 13, 2017 — 10:10:20 AM

Thanks to all who either posted photos or posted links to photos...I hadn't seen many of those pics of my ex-brother-in-law, Mark Baker. Wish I had seen the show!

I am confused on so many levels

Jun 19, 2016 — 7:27:41 PM

I had tickets to the Saturday evening show, too. It was so crowded going in, I didn't even see the board, but once inside and being handed a Playbill, I was surprised to hear the ushers asking everyone if they knew Laura and Jane were out. When I said no, the usher politely told me I could go back to the ticket window and request a refund....which I did, as my travelling companions and I had no open dates to reschedule. We ran down 8th and made it in time for Wicked, which one of us had never ...

If/Then Tour

Oct 20, 2015 — 11:42:52 AM

Looks good for those of us who are Jackie Burns fans. I saw If/Then 3 times in NY...twice with Idina and once with Jackie (flew up from FL specifically to see Jackie in the role), and I believe those who aren't able to see the show with Idina will not be disappointed with Jackie. Glad there's a FL stop on the tour!

Idina Menzel on UK X Factor

I can understand that someone might be disappointed that they missed Idina, but there's nothing disappointing about Jackie's performance. In fact, I think they should feel fortunate that they saw and heard one of Broadway's best....not every lead role has such an amazing standby.

SPOILER -- The River Previews

Nov 14, 2014 — 11:40:33 AM

MY guessing is more along the lines of, "why the heck did I spend this much money on something so lacking in almost everything I consider to be integral in good theatre?"

I'll be going on opening night, so I, too, am interested in reading those comments from those who attend previews.

1967-1970, 1974 Complete Tony Awards Videos

Jun 2, 2013 — 3:25:17 PM

Thank you! My brother-in-law was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical for Candide, and there he is, in the 1974 Tony Award Show, at 43 minutes into the program. I haven't seen Mark in years and years, and had forgotten what a cutie he was with all those curls!

Willemijn Verkaik leaves WICKED today

I was at her Broadway debut, too. Although she forgot a few of the lyrics, I was extremely impressed with her in the role (I've seen the show with quite a few different Elphabas). I saw her again in April, and she was excellent. I hope she returns to the States soon in another show (I'm assuming she's going back to her home for awhile, anyway).

Moms and theatre

May 12, 2013 — 10:26:40 PM

It's my first Mother's Day without my mom, too. My family was very involved in the entertainment biz....grandfather played sax with various Big Bands, mom was a singer, aunt a dancer on Broadway. When I was still in elementary school, we went to every production at a nearby theatre-in-the-round, where we saw shows such as Brigadoon, Guys and Dolls, Kismet, etc.

Jekyll & Hyde (Broadway Previews!)

I wish nothing but the best for Frank, the production team, the crew and the cast. I don't "hate" the show at all; in fact, I have posted before that I enjoyed it. That doesn't mean, however, that the show has no faults......at least, areas that, in my opinion, could be improved. I'm sure everyone involved will not be surprised if the reviews are bad, but I haven't relied on some critic's opinion to influence mine yet, with over 50 years of theatre-going. If I exit the theater , overall pleas...

Jekyll & Hyde (Broadway Previews!)

"In His Eyes" is my favorite, as well. One thing I failed to mention is that I agree with those who have commented on the unintelligibility of many of the lyrics. I would fault the sound system, except Laird Mackintosh and Teal Wicks were as clear as a bell. And, a friend of mine who had not seen a touring production nor the previous Broadway run commented that it was disconcerting that while all other cast members stayed in character at the end of their songs, Constantine and Deborah both of...
