Will Phantom Ever Close?

I don't hate it because it's bad. The score is mediocre and the story's fine. I hate it because it's successful. I know, this sounds horrible, but now I think it's time for Phantom to drop the chandelier once and for all.
It's stupid, I know, but do you think it will close any time soon? I'm waiting for the day Broadway is without a white mask (and a wedding gown at the Winter Garden, but that's another story).

It was awesome. - theaterkid1015

Ok, I get that Singer2, but they'd be fine locally. I mean, I saw a fantastic production of CATS at a local high school.
It's just ALW's ego that I want to burst.

That is a goal you will never fulfill. I'm sorry to be the one to tell you.

This is a butchered question....and everyone says within 5 years.
This show has been so unpredictable the past few years, it's hard to tell when...but its numbers are still very good, and most weeks they turn a profit.

Posted: 4/23/07 at 11:26pmI'm seeing it in about a week. I haven't seen the show yet, amazingly. THEN it can close - maybe.

Cockroaches, Cher, and Phantom of the Opera

Does Hal Prince still go every half year to check on the shape of the show? I always read how throughout the 90s that was one reason it was always in better hsape than some of the other long runs (I have to admit I have a sentimental spot for the show as it was my first pro musical when I ws 9 or so and I think Hal and Maria Bjornson's is still pretty thrilling and prob the best thing about the show.
Has the new Las Vegas production brought any renewed interest in the show elsewhere? i know it is doing very well

Posted: 4/24/07 at 12:30amWho cares if it stays open forever? Just because you don't like it, it should close? Boo-Hoo . . . get over yourself. I, along with MANY others have gotten into Broadway because of this show that people so fondly like to rip apart. It's bringing Broadway money and new fans everyday, so leave it alone. Here is a novel concept . . . . if you don't like it, talk about something that you do like and leave it alone. There are more important things in this world to get angry over, besides having PHANTOM still open after all these years.

No show runs forever? Someone tell that to Perfect Crime, PLEASE.
Aside from that, I would absolutely love to see Phantom close. Granted, I don't particularly like the show at all anyway, but I've seen it multiple times over the years and every time I see it the cast steadily became more and more dull. Its one of those shows that I think just needs to be closed up and put away before people who used to love it go back and see how boring and lackluster it is now.
That being said, aside from the insane tourist turnover that show has, I will never ever understand how the heck it has lasted this long.

Hey now DJ, I didn't say "I don't like it so it should close" because there are a LOT of shows I don't like which I think should close. I pointed out the extremely tired state the show was in the last few times I saw it. I feel, with any show, if it gets to a point where it is just a sagging, uninspired, drag then it should either be kicked in the butt and the cast woken up, or it should close. Forgetting people who have seen it 100 times, you don't want people going to see something for the first time when it is clearly not at the top of its game. I would rather see a show close than watch it play in a particularly bad form, and the last time I saw Phantom (which was admittedly a few years ago) I left thinking "please don't make me ever sit through this again." Before that time, I could have sat through it even though I don't like it. Unfortunately, since then I know several people who have seen it who have said the same thing and I don't think thats a good sign.
If Phantom closed tomorrow I would be far from sad.
