Theatremania is positive: "McKenzie Kurtz... gives a masterclass in musical comedy as Betsy"
Variety is positive - "all but irresistible — a giddy love letter to the form that’s enough to turn even the most skeptical curmudgeon into a walking heart-eye emoji."

It's pretty much the equivalent of a jukebox musical, with all but a few pre-existing songs.
Best musical is most likely going to TWO STRANGERS, and there's a lot of industry love behind it.

It's not at all the equivalent of a jukebox musical...
I feel somewhat vindicated - when this was announced, people on the board were tripping over themselves to say how badly it was going to bomb, and I said I could see it being a sleeper hit. With these reviews and the positive word of mouth I've been hearing, I wouldn't be surprised if this turns into a hit and takes Best Musical.

People on here already being totally normal at the prospect of their favorite show not winning Best New Musical. What a dumb take.

It’s the same as a show like Once or any Disney stage show: it’s an adaptation of a musical from another medium. Not at all a jukebox musical, and you know that (not that the Tonys have shied away from awarding worthy jukebox musicals, either).
And Schmigadoon also has plenty of “industry love,” too, whatever that really means. It’s a homegrown, big splashy love letter to Broadway with a cast and team full of well-loved people and it seems to be genuinely winning folks over.

Well I was one of those that thought this would crash and burn with awful reviews. I’m happy to say I was wrong.

I didn't say this was a jukebox musical — it just feels like one, given the pre-existing songs and not enough new material to constitute an original score, by Tony standards.

Since 2000, there have been shows that have won Best Musical, even though they didn't have Tony-eligible original scores: ''Contact,'' ''Jersey Boys'' and ''Moulin Rouge!''

It’s been a long time, though. Moulin Rouge! always feels like it doesn’t count because of COVID-19. The strong bias in recent years has been for shows perceived as artistic, with serious themes. (It doesn’t mean everyone liked the winners, but they were viewed as worthy.)
But this is a strange season. And something has to win.

Not from what I hear. The industry love is def not at the box office. Two Strangers is not as witty or smart as Schmigadoon. Lost Boys has far more polarizing buzz than Two Strangers. Meh doth not a best musical win make.

Once as well; Since most of the songs were lifted from the original film, it didn’t have enough new material to qualify for Best Score.
