I know there was a thread a while back about peoples' concerns over different recordings. Amazon has the 1989 original London cast on sale for $24. Is this worth buying? For reference, I love Sunset Blvd and JCS from Webber, I enjoy Song & Dance, Phantom is alright, and I can't stand Cats or Starlight Express.

Seem like a good deal and a good one to buy?

It's just a message board. Let's not take it too seriously.

That is a good deal. I have this recording. ( I paid 40 bucks for it-phoooey!) I love it and think it is a great investment.I love Michael Ball and many of the songs from this show. Although the show was not a hit, it remains one of my favorites. :)

I just bought it, I just listened to the 1st half once, and it sounds really cute.
Michael Ball and Ann Crumb sound fantastic in it.

it's hardly cute by the end.... keep listening.... when things get incestuous you know you're there

I believe that this is one of his most mature scores to date. it's rhapsodic with great singing and a wonderfully interesting story. (I would hardly call this score cute).
Michael Ball is in his best voice and the ladies rock. One of my favorite Lloyd Webber scores.

It's an interesting score ... certainly one of ALW's most sophisticated ... but the show itself gave me the creeps. What slimy, hideous, self-serving people. And didn't they know anyone else besides the four of them (not to mention the daughter) to go and sleep with? I wanted to take a shower afterwards.

funny - yeah. i've never seen the show, but have long admired the score. They do make reference to other people they are sleeping with (Alex has a girlfriend before he shoots Rose) and Rose has Hugo in Act 2. Even George is supposed to have a little something on the side throughout. But Rose is certainly a flakey actress who is desperately clinging to anyone who will meet her needs.

I love the score also. Never saw the musical though. Wish they would revive it.
