Oh, I say bring her in and let her do it. If the show has to be closed by spring anyway to make room for THE WEDDING SINGER, we're talking a very limited extension here, and it would keep the actors/musicians employed a few months longer and provide an interesting curiosity attraction.
Roxie Hart isn't so different from Charity Valentine, characterwise, so Griffith would probably at least pull it off from an acting standpoint. She's probably "closer" to what the character should be then Applegate, actually.

"Two years ago, the actress surprised the theater world by winning rave reviews as Roxie Hart in another Weissler show, the long-running 'Chicago.'"
I thought she received horrible reviews? I know PEOPLE didn't like her, but I really thought the critics didn't like her either.

I thought she's can't dance?
... not that it matters, clearly.

No! No! You've got no alternative
Seymour old boy
Though it means you'll be broke again and unemployed
it's the only solution, It can't be avoided-
The Weisslers must be destroyed!

Posted: 10/19/05 at 11:11amI would like to see any other actress in "Sweet Charity" as long as the shows keep running. Melanie Griffith can't dance at all....so it wouldn't work with her...but who knows?

Wow. I guess they will change ALL the choreography again for her.
Wow, maybe people would respect Applegate more if this does happen.
Atleast Estefan can sing and dance.
Riedel is 100% right about everything he said, Charity is A LOT harder to pull off than Roxie.

Did she get a rave review from Liz Smith?
Liz Smith would give a rave review to Cletus the Slack Jawed Yokel performing "The Tempest".

featuring Brandine as Miranda..."O brave new world/That has such critters in't"
What happened to my choice, Rosie Perez? A good Rosie/Gloria is better than a bad Melanie...can't they see that?

OH MY GOD!!!
YESSSSSSSSS!!!!
PLEASE!!!!!
After seeing her in Chicago, this is the most amazing news I have ever heard. If there is one thing that would get me to go back to that production (and maybe even watch the whole thing this time) it would be Melanie as Charity.
God, I hope this comes through. You have no idea what you'd be in for!!!

Hawn started out as a dancer in her early career and I think she can carry a tune fairly well. Used to sing alot on the old Laugh-In and did some crooning in First Wives Club.

Well I think she seems like a great choice, better than Melanie.
One of the best things about Charity is that she dosen't call for a specific race, there have been black and spanish Charitys. So I think Gloria would work.

I wouldn't want to see Melanie Griffith coming out singing "You Should See Yourself" when obviously, with the way she looks, girlfriend hasn't taken a good look at herself.
In other words, don't go near the stage dear. It's not as welcoming as the rhinoplasty doctor.
How old is Charity supposed to be?? 20s? 30s?

I agree. Griffith is a bit old to be Charity...she has to be at least 15-20 years older than Appelgate. Also, Charity is a much larger and complex role that never really leaves the stage. Hell...she doesn't even have time for costume changes really, except maybe here or there every few scenes.
Then again, Broadway has become the place for non-singing/non-dancing stars to finally get their dreams and star in Broadway musicals....ie Fiddler.
Griffith did get excellent reviews for Chicago but nearly all of them said she couldn't sing and couldn't dance. So take that in consideration.

Posted: 10/19/05 at 2:20pmHawn has always stuck me as someone who thought she could sing far better than she actually could. She sang "It's Not Easy Being Green" on some Ecology fundraiser and my ears bled. And as for Melanie, I am sure she had enough money. She should just retire and save us all the grief.
