Corbin Bleu Will Replace Hunter Parrish in Godspell Starting April 17th

On Tuesday, April 17, 2012, the company of Broadway’s first-ever revival of Stephen Schwartz’s legendary rock musical GODSPELL welcomes a new leading man — stage and screen star Corbin Bleu (Disney’s “High School Musical,” Broadway’s In the Heights) — to the starring role of Jesus.

Corbin Bleu follows original star Hunter Parrish, who is set to play his final performance as Jesus on Sunday, April 15, 2012, before returning to Los Angeles to begin filming the eighth season of the hit Showtime series “Weeds.”

“I know Corbin Bleu has a special affinity for GODSPELL, and with his great talent, charisma, and radiant energy, I know he will be terrific in the show,” said Stephen Schwartz. “I am very much looking forward to working with him and seeing him as our new Jesus.”

to be fair: Hunter was MUCH better in Godspell than he was in Spring Awakening -- but as I said in the other thread: I would have prefered to see Bleu, and I won't likely return JUST to see him.

Am I the only one who finds it odd that Hunter Parrish is leaving before the Tony nominations? I haven't seen the show, so I have no idea if he had a chance or not. But, are they going to have to make a ruling for Corbin Bleu, or is he ineligible? I have no idea how this stuff works. Again, I'm not saying the show will or should be nominated. Just curious.

Yes, the reason is the return to weeds, they were always aware of his departure date.

I didn't like the production as a whole enough to sit through it again. I only get into the city about once a month and prefer to keep my duplicate viewing to only shows I truly love. (I'm not saying my mind couldn't be changed...but that's not likely.)

No, baby, I meant Hunter as Jesus is color blind casting, which he kind of is. But I totally got what you meant. You're right, a BLACK(ish) Jesus probably would set off alarm bells in the most racist of folks, but I don't think this show will really be on the radar for them. But then again, if you'd told me this country would be arguing about contraception in 2012 for Christ's (heh) sake, I would have thought you were crazy, so what do I know?

This is the greatest news since Wonder created sliced bread. Corbin Bleu is a brilliant cast choice for the role of Jesus. Yes I am sure the right wings will go up in arms. But Hey, They go up in arms if the someone passes gas next to em. Now Hunter Parish is a very talented man but I found him boring and well miscast in this production when I saw it. He was vocally out matched by his cast members. I think Corbin Bleu will bring something we haven't seen before and I look forward to seeing the show again with him in it.
There is nothing in the world better than Live Theater.
