you hate Gypsy, but think ALW is good enough to put him in your screen name? Interesting...
Just so you know I hate Gypsy too, I saw it on broadway with Peters, and hated her as well as the production, but I have a feeling its the night I saw it because I went with 5 friends and they all hated it with a passion as well.

I think the music is fair, the lyrics are excellent, the book is quite good, but the main character is the epitome of unsympathetic.
As far as the overture goes, there are overtures that I feel are head and shoulders above Gypsy, She Loves Me being one of them.
Did you see some elementary school production or something?
- Exactly. I've heard stories about 13 year old Roses, and that is quite scary. That is probally what this member saw!

I've seen a number of professional productions, and two film versions.
Tyne Daly
Linda Lavin
Ros Russel
Bernadette "Who the hell ever said she could sing" Peters
and Bette "almost made this character worth watching" Midler
and only Midler came close to making the show bearable for me.
When I was four my dad stuck me onstage as the Balloon Girl in a production of Gypsy he was directing- and I fell in love with damn show then.
Even after acting in three times, and seeing about twenty different productions, it is still my favorite musical. I still tear up when I hear the overture.
Every time I see it I find more to admire and appreciate, it is just such a layered, brilliant piece of theater.

Fenchurch - If you hate it so much why did you go to see it that many times?
Maybe he/she wants to prove that he/she really hate the show, not the cast.
Gypsy's book and music are some of the best written for musical theater. There is nothing unecessary in it and what is written communicates a heartbreaking story of a woman who's life could never be what she wanted it to be. And having seen both movies and the 2003 revival I have to say that Bernadette Peters was the best Rose out of the three. Her performance as Rose was flawless and her voice was fabulous.

- This probally one the first good points you've actually made on this board, Stalker.
Bernadette "Who the hell ever said she could sing" Peters

YES YES YES YES YES YES YES!
I LOVE YOU, rose!
I love Gypsy's music and lyrics. The book is ok, just the ending spoils the whole pot of stew. It just gives me the feeling that it ends so abruptly, the meaning of the whole play just lost in mid air. Anyhow, Bernadette's Rose's Turn is the most powerful of all. I really want to make a standing ovation when she bows.

Living in New York, I've had to take relatives from out of town to shows many many times, often shows that I did not want to see, which is how I saw the following shows:
Cats (three times)
Starlight Express
Mamma Mia
Nick and Nora (which I actually kinda liked, except for the 2nd act)
Sunset Boulevard
Scarlet Pimpernel
J&H
Annie get your Gun revival (which I hated with Bernadette, but loved with Reba)
The Goodbye Girl (which was so bad even Peters couldn't have ruined it)
Did I mention I hate Bernadette Peters? :)

Joyce DeWitt, huh?
Do you mean the production where she though Herbie was having an affair with Tulsa, but it just turned out to be Mr Goldstone and Mrs. Roper?
I remember that episode, uh, I mean production :)
