How's the view from row H in the right rear balcony? I know the Shubert has some poles up there and I'm a little worried that they may block my view.

Those clips are sensational! What a thrill to see her when she was doing it in the 80's and especially the 70's. I would love to know who everyone else in the cast is in both versions.

In the 80's version.. about 8 minutes or so into the clip she introduces Mary Martin who is in the audience.

Absolute thanks for sharing. I saw Carol in the 1990s production and it was a huge treat to see THE quintessential Dolly, Carol Channing. She was in the finest of forms and it will go down as one of those very special moments of mine in all my years of theater-going. I would have always felt like I missed out on something had I never seen Carol in the role. Such an enchanting lady and so fun to watch her address the San Francisco audience there on opening night with Mary Martin in the house. Great video!

Just have to comment:
I was at the opening night of HELLO DOLLY! on January 16, 1964. My father was an auto mechanic and one of his clients had show business connections. Through this man we got 3rd row center seats at the outrageous cost of 9.90 per ticket.
I was 17 years old at the time and when Carol stepped off that trolley something inside me changed. To this day I don't know exactly what happened but I do know I was never going to be the same kid I was. I know love factors into this and it's lasted for 53 years.
In that time I've gotten to know both Carol and Jerry Herman and I value them greatly.I saw the original production 74 times and was never less than thrilled each time. I've lost count of how many times I've seen revivals and touring companies.
I was at the 1st preview of the new production and shed so many tears of joy that I thought I'd dehydrate.
Someone who knows me very well said HELLO DOLLY ! is not a show to me. It's my left ventricle. I'll buy that.
Thanks for reading.

That's an awesome story, dollypop! I hope you'll go to Hello Dolly's opening night next week! :)
I saw this show again last Wednesday evening and sadly Bette did not stage door. It was interesting since her car was there outside the SHubert and we all thought the security was joking when they told us Bette is not coming out. They started to take the barricades away and that's when everyone started to leave. The car also left.

If I don't get tickets for next week's opening, it'll be the first one I've missed since 1964. So far, I'm not having much luck--but I just had my tux dry cleaned, just in case.

Good luck in getting hold of a ticket, dollypop. Here's wishing you the best, and I hope you get to see another opening night of Dolly. And thanks for sharing the story. A great one indeed.
I'm glad to hear this latest revival is doing so well as it really is a beautiful musical with some truly fun, engaging and uplifting songs. When I saw it with Carol back in the 90s I had forgotten how great the songs were and how lively and funny the show is.
For me there will never be another Dolly but Carol (she's just so iconic in the role), but so good to hear things are popping with the latest revival. When I saw the cast list I knew it would be super, right down to some of the names I recognized in the chorus from other shows I've seen. Some great dancers in there.
Have fun and good luck.

"I heard she wasn't feeling well that night and came out much later after everyone left including taking down the barricades outside stage door.

Has anyone sat in this seat? Should I exchange it?
Thanks for any insight!

I sat in row J seat one which was on the left side. The view was fine. Didn't miss anything.

Never sat in the balcony at the Shubert. Looking to grab some $89 seats in August, how's the view?

I watched Matilda from balcony. Up at balcony it is full view but you won't be able to see facial expressions that well. Legroom sucks too unless you have an aisle seat.

One day a week I volunteer at our local hospital. Today one of the nurses passed me and asked the name of the cologne I was wearing. The devil got into me and I responded, "Elegance" by Jerry Herman.

One of the digital channels has been running a ongoing tribute to Bette with some of her specials as well as Carol on the Mike Douglas show as she was about to leave the original company of Hello, Dolly. They have been showing a lot of nice shots of 44th street at the time. I guess the Mike Douglas show was taping from what is now the Helen Hayes theater. Fascinating.

To those who have access to the NY Times review: take a look at the picture of Bette on the staircase. Doesn't her face look out of proportion? Photoshop anyone?
