So, my theatre teacher has given out clues as to what the Spring musical will be. Spare me the "why keep the show secret" jokes. However, I thought it would be interesting to see what was up here 13 clues.

1 ) We know that one of the 3 shows is The Music Man

2 ) 2 of the 3 were made into movies

3 ) 2 were produced on Broadway before 1950

4 ) 2 take place in the US

5 ) Only 2 of the 3 are known as dance oriented musicals

6 ) One is a Lerner and Lowe show

7 ) One of the musicals has songs that werent originally written for the musical.

8 ) All have major romantic plots

9 ) One has not been revived on Broadway

10 ) It is not Annie, Grease, The Sound of Music, Into The Woods, or Bye Bye Birdie (nothing to similar to Bye Bye Birdie either)

11) Shirley Jones starred in one of the movies

12 ) There are no animals whatsoever in any of the shows

13 ) Keep in mind we have a strong soprano senior, a strong tenor senior, a decent baritone junior, a non singing comedic actress, and an older role typecast tenor actor.

Let the games begin :)

Keep in mind that since The Music Man is deffinitely one of the 3 shows that she has in mind, both remaining shows have to have been produced before the 50s. The Music Man was produced in 57 I believe? Updated On: 9/18/06 at 10:19 PM

I'm thinking Oklahoma! but I have no way of backing it up.

Edit: Shirley Jones was in Oklahoma!

I was going to say My Fair Lady, but if The Music Man is definitely one of the three, then one of them has to be a Lerner/Loewe show from before 1950, which would prompt me to say Brigadoon as well. Of the four L/L shows from pre-1950's, that's the most well-known, and I would imagine it would be chosen.

Having said that, the third one:
-wasn't made into a movie
-was never revived
-was produced before 1950
-has a romantic plot
-is NOT a dance-oriented musical (assuming "Shipoopi" makes TMM a qualifier)

That's basically a huge toughie.

I agree that it must be BRIGADOON.

The third choice must not take place in the united states, it must use music not originally intended for the show, and it must not be a movie.

I really don't know. My original guess was SOUTH PACIFIC, but the last two don't apply.

Isn't Brigadoon half set in Scotland or something?

More than half, yes. I would assume that counts for not taking place in the US, but that means the last choice also does not take place in the US because THE MUSIC MAN does.

I wouldn't rule out TMM as the non-dance show. I'm not sure that Shipoopi is enough to throw it into the dance show arena. The most likely lead girl candidate is a first soprano, she has played Rapunzel in Into The Woods, Maria in The Sound of Music, Kim in Bye Bye Birdie, Stella in The Uninvited, Annie Sullivan in The Miracle Worker, and now Emily in Our Town. There have been rumors that it is going to be light hearted to counteract the heaviness and density of Our Town which is the fall drama this year. Just to give you an idea of where she could fall role wise.

Also, 2 take place in the US... and one does not.

THE MUSIC MAN, as written, is incredibly dance-heavy.

There are huge, enormous dance breaks and ballets in 76 TROMBONES, MARIAN THE LIBRARIAN, and SHIPOOPI. There may even be others - but those three are major. As the score from MTI reads, they are all included and all incredibly long.

Hmmm... I guess the production I saw toned that down.

2 ) 2 of the 3 were made into movies - THE MUSIC MAN, BRIGADOON

3 ) 2 were produced on Broadway before 1950 - BRIGADOON, ?

4 ) 2 take place in the US - THE MUSIC MAN, ?

5 ) Only 2 of the 3 are known as dance oriented musicals - THE MUSIC MAN, BRIG.

6 ) One is a Lerner and Lowe show - BRIGADOON

7 ) One of the musicals has songs that werent originally written for the musical. - ?

9 ) One has not been revived on Broadway - ?

11) Shirley Jones starred in one of the movies - THE MUSIC MAN

SO...

Our last remaining show must:

-not have been revived
-must contain songs not originally written for the show
-must take place in the United States
-must have been produced before 1950

Munk, you can add that it's not a movie, and isn't a categorized dance show.

Still, that opens up so many possibilities. Blah.

CAROUSEL did open before 1950, but it has been revived several times.

Could be SOUTH PACIFIC, but what songs are in SOUTH PACIFIC that were not originally intended for the show?

Unless your director made a mistake, I can't think of anything obvious that it would be.

You school wouldn't put on something random like MEXICAN HAYRIDE. I'm at a loss.

Perhaps loosen up on the 1950s rule to include late 50s maybe even early 60s?

Also, for the songs not originally for the musical I get the impression that maybe they were from different musicals and fused together? That one is tricky and leaves me at a loss.

the songs not originally for the musical thing makes me thing of the whole 30s / Berlin / Gershwin thing... but what the heck out of that are you doing??

Yeah, I guess, for both.

I know my high school would never do anything like Oh, Kay given that no one has heard of it - unless someone's great-grandpa is an 80-year-old show queen. My high school was typical. Amen to a school that will do something riskier than the nth production of Birdie or Footloose or The Sound of Music.
