Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind for Best Picture!

Jamie Foxx will probably get the nomination for the same reason that Will Smith did for Ali. Both doing a gimmack and people praising it as acting. Of course I'm being a bit unfair to Foxx considering I haven't seen Ray yet. Who knows, he might actually deserve the hype.
I think Alfosno Cuaron should get an Oscar nod for Best Director, but I know he won't. That's the most off-beat choice I ever had I think because Harry Potter 3 isn't a movie that would get that sort of attention.
I think it's way too early to say people should *win* Oscars considering that it is still really early.
About Charlize Theron, she was actually tied for my second choice for Best Actress. I gave it to Naomi Watts, myself, for 21 Grams which is weird because I thought people overrated her in Muholland Drive (although I loved the movie).
But not Best Screenplay, Plum.
And as far as Naomi Watts goes, I thought she was tremendous in 21 Grams, but I have never been so transfixed by a performance in my life as I was by Charlize Theron in Monster.

I actually liked Volume 2 a whole lot better than Volume 1, which was all flash an no substance. But the second needs the first, so if there's nominations happening they should be together.
Vol 2 was all substance and no flash, though. Had QT allowed a REALLY great story editor to come in and whittle away at it and trim it down to 2 and half, maybe 3 hours in length and he'd released it as one movie, then Kill Bill would have probably been my film of the year. As it was, it wasn't.
i think moore's gonna be the victim of some backlash. the media came across to anyone even remotely conservative over the better part of the last year as the unpaid arm of the kerry campaign. i don't mean the corporations that own them, but rather (were ya waiting for it?) the faces that fill the tv screens every night and morning and weekend on the networks. i'm not saying they outright shilled for him, but subtle nuances such as an inflection here or there or a word here or there or a rolled eye belied any sense of objectivity.
thus, i think that regardless of whether it's true or not, they're going to re-double their efforts to appear unbaised. what's the quickest way to achieve that? start attacking liberal sacred cows and moore's a prime target. the fact that there will be those on the left who'll blame him for polarizing voters with f9/11 won't help. i envision him getting some really bad press over the next few months and if he puts f9/11 up for best picture only (dos it even still qualify for best documentary? i thought there was something about that earlier that for some reason it couldn't?) he's gonna be quite saddened at the result.
now don't get me wrong, i'm not saying that any of this is right, nor am i saying that the aforementioned liberal bias in the media is outrageous or over the top. i'm just saying that the perception is there and that's usually how the media tries to correct things. by swinging way back in the other direction so far that they miss the mark by a mile. plus they gotta be thinking, "s***, if those idiots can manage to get bush re-elected, what the f*** can't they do???"
just my 14.7645213 cents...
Has anyone seen Veras Drake? I am anxious to see it and Imelda Staunton has received such good reviews and early Oscar buzz..I am much more anxious to see this than I am Ray...

I liked Kill Bill vol. 1 much better than vol. 2 because I think Quentin Taritino took his characters way too seriously in vol. 2, and by that time it was too late.
However, I didn't think Uma should have even been considered being nominated for Vol. 1, but I think she totally deserves consideration for vol. 2.
Funny how things like that work.

Of course F9/11 is in the Best Picture category, it wasn't a documentary...
Note: Super Size Me should win Best Documentary, Making The Monster was descent but it made me hate Lars more.

Any type of film is eligible for Best Picture, so your comment isn't quite so witty, Westopher.
Moore wasn't keeping his documentary from being nominated in the Best Doc category for his ego--it was actually pretty selfless in that it meant more to try to get the film aired on TV then to win the Oscar--which he would have EASILY in that category. Due to the timing issue with that category, I am not sure if he is still eligible for it--if he is, he will be picking up that Oscar in Feb. Otherwise, it leaves category open for the other break out documentaries of this year. Best Picture was always a possibility because the documentary broke through such amazing records and was considered to be a well made and entertaining film--no matter what one's opinion is of the politics. However, it's chances of this nomination do indeed depend on which direction the Academy goes: conservative as papa predicts or rebellious as Auggie predicts. I can see it going either way--much depends on how things go these next couple of months.
The two actors who are receiving the greatest praise at the moment are Jamie Foxx and Imelda Staunton. The thing is the Best Actor category is extremely competitive this year with so many great performances. EW did an article on this a couple of weeks ago.
I love Kill Bill--both parts equally. I don't know if the Academy will show it any love--my guess is no.
While it is true that we have a number of films to be released to know for certain which will be contenders, now is the time when the buzz heats up--particularly as many in the industry have seen the films that have not been released yet.
I'm really surprised that nobody has mentioned Billy Crudup's top notch turn in Stage Beauty.
Any predictions on Rennee Z get props again for BJD2? My guess is no, but they're releasing it this late for a reason...
My guess is no as well. The advance buzz in the UK has been extremely uninspiring as have the early reviews. Although they're apparently moving the release date up in the US after overwhelming positive test screenings. So we'll see.
Vera Drake is exquite, all of the performances are remarkable, but mostly Staunton's. You'll never forget her face, as she must carry the last 3rd of the film with almost no words. It's just a beautiful movie. (Anyone else who has seen it: my favorite moment is when the poor beleagured son-in-law says "this is the best Christmas I've ever had..." It made me cry. It comes as a surprise, earns a laugh at the same time--which is Mike Leigh's genius.)
The supporting categories oughta be intresting. Laura Dern, anyone? And I've heard buzz that Natalie Portman might get one for GARDEN STATE. My own favorite this year: Fenella Woolgar in BRIGHT YOUNG THINGS. But then, it was my favorite movie of the dreary summer.
I adored Fenella in Bright Young Things. "We've never had a party in an asylum before, have we? Or have we?" Wonderful.
I think Garden STate is definitely a shoo-in for best screenplay. ditto on natalie for best supporting.
what's the buzz on alfie?
Did anyone see The Clearing starring Robert Redford and Willem Defoe?
It came out in early June if I remember correctly, and it was a fantastic movie. I think it would make a marvelous Oscar candidate for picture and actors nominations, but I guess it camr out at the wrong time.
Anyone else see it?

Mixed, according to Metacritic. I don't think Jude Law is going to be getting much out of this, because they pretty much fluffified the old movie and took out any social significance it might have had.
I didn't see it, little fish, but friends who did agree with you completely.
do you think tehy're going to be lobbying for natalie portman to get best supporting for alfie?
Regardless of what the remake of Alfie has done to the original, there's no denying Jude Law is very good in the title role. Infinitely better than Michael Caine was.
I would love love love to see Zach Braff win the Oscar for Best Screenplay but I don't see it happening, personally.
Yeah, I was in high school when the original came out, and never could buy Caine as the desireable hunk o'man the script said he was. (If my memory serves, Terrence Stamp actually played it on the stage -- who eerily enough, looked rather Jude Law like in youth.) But Caine, wonderful as he is, seems asexual to me, always needing a bath and a good mouthwash. I remember when Barbara Hershey boinked him in HANNAH AND HER SISTERS; I had to look away from the screen, as charming as he was. As for Alfie? Let's face it, the movie is all about the bed-ability of the lad. If the lad isn't irrisistable, which Jude is, the premise is male fantasy of a bizarre sort.
Off topic, but not: Anyone find Danny Huston an odd romantic match-up for Nicole Kidman in BIRTH? What a strange gent to see in bed with La Nic. He is borderline creepy.
Well, according to Rotten Tomatoes, the two best reviewed films of the year so far are SIDEWAYS and THE INCREDIBLES. I'll bet INCREDIBLES is up for best pic.
Laura Dern was fantastic in WE DON'T LIVE HERE ANYMORE. It's time she was honored.
