"I believe Michael Moore has said he won't submit FARENHEIT 9/11 for Best Documentary bacause 1) he already has a Documentary Oscar and wants to open up a slot for someone else, 2)he wants a shot at Best Picture, and 3) it wasn't a documentary to begin with, those have to be true."
There we go...

Don't hold a grudge against animation Plum, Spirited Away duly won.

No, Moore's not submitting his film had to do with wanting it aired on TV, which would make it ineligible. He did then say that he was ok with it because he knew he would win and that this would give someone else a chance in a year of good docs.

Interesting awards season info!

The Golden Globes' rules are in stark contrast to the Oscar rules--the Golden Globes will not allow a foreign film or documentary to be nominated for top awards. Therefore, F/911 and Passion of the Christ will suffer this.

Yeah, the rules were always like that. Thats why Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon wasn't nominated for Best Drama Film despite it winning Best Director.

I don't think the celebrity chasers that call themselves the Hollywood Press Association even know what a documentary is, as they don't give awards for that category.

"F9/11 is NOT Best Picture. Best Documentary yes, Best Picture - not even close."

Look for Tarnation for Best Documentary. Artistically, it is superior.

The following post is an observation, NOT a flame, NOR my attempt to change anyone's opinon.

I think that the Academy likes it's advertising dollars. After all, it is equated to the Superbowl when it comes to advertsing women's products.

If the Academy were to give a Best Picture Oscar to Farenheit 9/11 they would lose the 51% of us that voted for Bush.

One article I read indicated that if 9/11 is even nominated, millions of people won't tune in to the Oscars at all.

**************
On the Animated film category..

As far as only three nominations goes, sometimes there are barely that many. I mean didn't that crappy Atlantis movie get nominated a couple years ago just because there was no one else to nominate?

This also goes back to that it's unfortunate when a great movie losed Best Picture to a better movie just because they came out in the same year (like The Wizard of Oz losing to Gone With the Wind) but then a crappy movie like Unforgiven winning because there was nothing else good that year.

Hey, I have a really great reason not to nominate Farenheit 9/11. It's only half a good movie. The first half was atrocious, and the good second half can't make up for that. I'm sure there are 5 better films out this year. Sideways comes to mind right away because I adore Alexander Payne. Hero, Garden State, and even The Motorcycle Diaries, as much as I despise it, should all probably be ranked above Moore's film. The Incredibles will probably be ghettoed into the Animated Film category, just like Hero and Maria Full of Grace might get stuck in Foreign Film. But really, even Shaun of the Dead was a better overall movie than Farenheit 9/11. And I say this as a ragin' bleeding heart lefty. Updated On: 11/10/04 at 11:50 AM

Sorry. :)

It's just starting to feel like a "Will Assassins be a revival?" sort of controversy, and I'm not seeing it. Updated On: 11/10/04 at 11:53 AM

re: 2005 oscars If it makes you feel better, I loved F9/11, but I don't think it will be nominated for Best Picture. re: 2005 oscars

Hi all.....Finding Neverland should get a nod as well as a nod for Depp and for Winslett.

I LOVED this movie. I thougth it was the best thing I have seen so far this year.

Ray was great too. Foxx should get a nod as well as the woman that played his mother and I think Regina king has a good chance too

Sorry to burst your bubble Plum, but Hero was already nominated for Best Foreign Film back in 2002. The reason why it took so long for it to be released in the States was because Harvey Weinstein didn't feel like releasing it (not even on DVD) after he bought the American rights to it. It wasn't until Quentin Taratino, fresh off of Kill Bill success, finally got Harvey to do a theatrical release.

Since it was already nominated for Best Foreign Film, the rules state that it is no longer eligible for other awards too. So unlike City of God where it failed to get nominated for Best Foreign Film in 2002, but was able to get nominated for Best Cinematography, Best Screenplay, Best Editing, and Best Director in 2003.

The rules are a bit weird for foreign films. If they are just submitted but not released theatrically in the U.S, then they are still eligible for Best Foreign Film (but no other category)if their host country(only one allowed her country) wishes to submit that film that year if they play in L.A. for 2-3 days. If they fail to get nominated for Best Foreign Film, but they do a wide theatrical (wide meaning limited too, I think) then they are still eligible to get nominated for other categories if they wish to do so. If they were nominated, they can't.

Some movies like Life is Beautiful and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon lucked out because they were widely released in the same year they were eligible for Best Foreign Film. Therefore could get nominated for all the categories including Foreign Film.

Of course, my citation of the rules are a bit iffy. You're best bet is to check out Oscar.org and read them yourself.

Ah, thank you. I didn't know that about Hero. It was an awfully good movie, though.

I'm still cheering for Eternal Sunshine for Best Picture. Updated On: 11/10/04 at 12:23 PM

PLUM: Why did 9/11, The Passion and Diaries piss you off? If you don't mind me asking?

I enjoyed all three.

Fahrenheit 9/11 made me mad for all the usual reasons Michael Moore makes me mad- its condescending assumption that Mr. Moore is smirkingly coming from on high to tell us the truth of things. The second half was excellent, however- Moore was smart enough to move aside and let the natural pathos of war take over.

Passion pissed me off because, in the words of David Edelstein, it was basically the Jesus Chainsaw Massacre- a holy snuff movie. I don't see the redeeming spiritual value in hours of unrelenting blood and gore. Sorry, Mel. Nothing transcendental there for me.

And The Motorcycle Diaries pissed me off because I'm really tired of the glorification of Che by people who barely know who he was, except that he was a "revolutionary." re: 2005 oscars

Sorry I don't have time to elaborate right now.
