Well, according to Rotten Tomatoes, the two best reviewed films of the year so far are SIDEWAYS and THE INCREDIBLES. I'll bet INCREDIBLES is up for best pic.
Laura Dern was fantastic in WE DON'T LIVE HERE ANYMORE. It's time she was honored.
I love Love LOVE Laura Dern. I couldn't agree with you more Sueleen.
Won't The Incredibles have to be up for Best Animated Picture though?
Hasn't any other animated films been up for best picture though?
(Wow, that was nice English <---English student of the year.)
Pop, they are pushing INCREDIBLES for best pic. Remember BEAUTY AND THE BEAST was nominated in that catagory.
Beauty And The Beast's nomination was YEARS before there was an Animated Feature category though. I would think now that they have that category, they won't nominate any animated feature in the Best Picture category.
Which would make sense, otherwise it implies that Best Animated is second-tier to Best Picture.
Well..I don't see how anything could be much better than Shrek 2

Yes, it is.
And Toy Story, Toy Story 2, and Finding Nemo are all easily better than Shrek 2.
um, hello, animated movies? fritz the cat, baby!

Not that this has anything to do with the Oscars, but My Neighbor Totoro is the most brilliant animated movie I've seen in ages, and I hate anime.
not even for lines like this, beav?
why does a great actor like james earl jones always have to play black men?

The Animated Film category has sucked since its first year, when they didn't nominated Waking Life. So whatever.
heh heh, plum said sucked.
heh heh.
suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucked.
Toy Story was okay, I never saw ToyStory 2, and I looooved Finding Nemo...but I was only referring to the current year...
Waking Life is one of the dullest films in Christendom. Pretty to look at, sure, but such a chore to actually watch. The movie was shot like any other live action movie and then every frame was digitally animated afterwards. I swear Richard Linklater (the best example of emperor's new clothes EVER) looked at the finished live action cut and said "my GOD this film is dull, how can I solve that? I know, I'll colour it in."
As for Best Animated Feature, there are 11 films competing for just three nomination spaces. Why can't it be 5 nominations like any other main category?
Yes, Beaverhausen, there are. According to comingsoon.net, the 11 films are:
- Clifford's Really Big Movie
- Disney's Teacher's Pet
- Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence
- Home on the Range
- The Incredibles
- The Legend of Buddha
- The Polar Express
- Shrek 2
- Shark Tale
- Sky Blue
- The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie

I think there has to be a minimum of 24 in order for any category to get 5 nominees. I'm iffy on the 24.
I didn't really have any problem with the Animated Picture category other than Millenium Actress getting snubbed over Brother Bear. I think every movie that won should have won that category. I wasn't too crazy about the first year because I think Shrek is vastly overrated, but the first one is loads better than the second one.
I thought the second year of that category was excellent, 5 nominees with Spirited Away and Lilo and Stitch.
I agree with Plum, Toy Story, Toy Story 2, Finding Nemo, and a lot of other animated movies are all better than Shrek 2. You should pick up Toy Story 2, it's on a totally different level from the first one, IMO.

I just adored The Polar Express as a child, though not as much as some of Chris van Allburg's other books. He's a magnificent illustrator, and his stories aren't bad, either, even if they don't necessarily make great movies. Jumanji, anyone?

I really want to see 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' take the gold!
I hope 'Phantom' does well at the oscars for the sake of movie musicals
I hope so too,but I have a feeling it'll only do well in technical categories, and maybe the original song.
Best Animated Film does not mean that an animated film can not be nominated for Best Picture--it does lessen the chances as some may feel that said film will get its due in that category. However, look at Best Foreign Film nominees that also received a Best Picture nomination. This is also why F9/11 has Best Picture buzz--it could (or could have) been nominated in both categories.
Unless Polar is stunning, I think The Incredibles will win Best Animated Film. It's just really really good.

I believe Michael Moore has said he won't submit FARENHEIT 9/11 for Best Documentary bacause 1) he already has a Documentary Oscar and wants to open up a slot for someone else, and 2)he wants a shot at Best Picture.
I would love to see Kate Winslet get a nom for ETERNAL SUNSHINE.
i just watched shrek 2 and it blew.
yeah, the technology made great strides and yeah it was pretty and all, but c'mon. i kept waiting for the story to kick in. i kept waiting for the magic that i felt when i watched the first movie.
the preformances were pretty good although i think that was the worst use of john cleese in a film since...well, since he's been performing. it just was empty of anything even remotely resembling a heart. sure there were jilarious moments, but you could feel them coming and see the work that went into making them funny. it felt like the technology overpowered the story, "we're gonna do this now! just watcha and see!!" weird to say that spectacle was winning over substance in an animated feature, lol.
although, i gotta say, i'm strangely attracted to fiona in her ogre form.
