1975. Looking for my first apt... circled Village Voice ads every day, attending endless "open houses" for really nice places on the UWS that I couldn't afford. These asshole RE agents showed BROOM CLOSETS, just like this chick's apt w/serious looks on their faces - but the open houses elicited HOWLS of laughter from the wannabee renters!
Long story short. Finally found an L- shaped 7' x 25' apt. at 293 CPW! (89th St) w/built in beautiful loft bed/couch/storage underneath, tiny kitchen, good bath. $195.00. I thought that was a lot of money. Lived there for 11 yrs. The loft sleeping (full size!) was kinda nice actually. I used to have parties there all the time (wall to wall people) and it was FUN. I painted it Purple w/White trim. My only furnishings - carpeting, piano, lamps, Playbills, books, and a club chair. Cozy. Had to build a closet. One wall of windows, though!
Your smallest apt??? I'm curious.

This video really is making the rounds today. I would have panic attacks every night if I had to live there.

Posted: 4/2/11 at 3:27pmI am way too claustrophobic for a space that small. Not to mention I really love my shoes!

Posted: 4/3/11 at 1:29pmI pay the same amount as her to live in a classic six (with a roommate) in Queens. Just goes to show what some people will do to have a coveted Manhattan address.

Posted: 4/4/11 at 4:27pmLooks like it may have been a maids room that got walled off the apt next door.

Posted: 4/4/11 at 4:37pmSave for the bed, I could probably do that. Not for the price though. $250-300 fine, but $800 for a closet apartment. No way. My friend keeps telling me when I do move there to go for Queens.

Posted: 4/5/11 at 3:54pmi was on a date with this woman on the upper west side and it was tiny, when I went to use the bathroom, I went to the bathroom before we went to a movie and I realized that she had no windows in the apartment. Freaky. Must've been split in two.

Besides from seeming really expensive for that amount of space, I actually don't mind it. I must have really low standards.

Posted: 4/5/11 at 5:01pmlol no, Im in CT. Stamford - a quick 35 minute car ride outside of midtown. When I meet friends for drinks, I often make it home before those who live in queens or brooklyn

Posted: 4/5/11 at 5:17pmI tend to think that people who call it "the horizontal mambo" don't engage in it, either.

I think if you want something bad enough, you will do "almost" anything to achieve your goal.
I wanted to check out Seattle in the late 90's for a year, so I moved into a 20 foot travel trailer without a real tiolet. it was an adventure. I met fabulous people and saw many touring shows...I had a ball.
Actually, I was only in the trailer for four months until I could get a cheap apartment.
I would love that Manhattan Apartment for a year, except I would use that bedroom space for storage.

Posted: 4/5/11 at 11:07pmI think I could handle the bed. My sophomore of college my roommate brought a fairly large bunk bed and the distance from the ceiling to the bed in that apartment looks about the same as the distance between the ceiling and the top bunk.

Posted: 4/5/11 at 11:24pmI think the ceiling height on the bed is what would bother me. I actually like sleeping up higher, just need enough head space to sit up all the way. The rest of the apartment would probably be too small for me.

Posted: 4/5/11 at 11:45pmI could probably make that space work for myself if that was the living space and there was also a kitchen. I like to cook way too much to limit myself to a dorm fridge and a toaster oven.

Posted: 4/5/11 at 11:54pmIf you like to cook, and I LOOOOVE to cook, a small kitchen will do. I've always had dollhouse kitchens. Microwave - check, Toaster Oven - check - Slow Cooker - check- . George Forman Grill - check - 4 pans (Tools of The Trade Belgigue Stainless, inexpensive and great!). .

I can make do with a small kitchen. It's no kitchen that would drive me insane. Especially since I just inherited an amazing set of Revere Ware pots and pans from my grandmother. It's the set that she and my grandfather used for forever and of course holds the sentimental value that it's also the set that I also learned a lot of my cooking on through my grandfather.
My roommate keeps joking that I'm totally ready to leave stage managing and just become a happy little home maker. Now to find the man who can support me in the lifestyle I hope to become accustomed to, lol.

Posted: 4/6/11 at 3:07pmI could totally live there. I had a dorm room about that size my sophomore year of college. It was the former music building, built in the early 1920s, and all of the practice rooms were converted into single dorm rooms. It was cozy, but I really don't spend that much time in my apartment anyway.
