Agreed BluCat.
But, I do wonder if some of the humor would be lost with an black Glinda. The character is such a stereotype of the ditzy, blonde waspish girl, and I don't know if it would play as well without the ditzy, blonde, waspish girl.

I don't even care of being accused a racist because as whoever said it, color bling casting is impractical.
A white or asian "Raisin in the sun" or "Color Purple", please. You know it would be ridiculous.
Or a non white Oklahoma......it wouldn't work.
And lets face it folks, anyone who goes in and sees a non pinky skinned Glinda will have a hard time believing her. We grew up with Glinda being white, and as Wicked feeds off the success of The Wizard of Oz shamelessly (and thats what draws its audience) they know they have to copy the classic looks as much as possible. I never saw the big deal about TWOZ, so you could throw me a midget indian Glinda and I'd go with it, but most wouldn't.
To the original poster, this was a good question but more so as to why there was a different Glinda in the finale. The backlash was mainly those who were afraid to sound un P.C but really probably think it anyway.

OMG maybe before posting we should read previous postings...this is becoming redundant and frankly I don't see anyone REALLY disagreeing here. It works for a lot of cases, some it doesn't. I don't think anyone's going to get called racist for that. Although I don't get the non-white Oklahoma...
HOwever something to think about...IF there were a black Glinda, I'd imagine her like the black girl from Clueless. I haven't seen the movie but once so I don't know the characters names. WASPY is kind of the wrong connotation for Glinda. That's such a dated term anyway. I see Glinda as a Valley Girl. California/Elle Woods. I could see a black girl pulling that off. It'd just require someone who respects the text and doesn't turn her into Ghetto Fabulous Glinda. THAT would be wrong. THe other way I could buy it.

I dont know why, but I would LOVE to see an African American or Asian Roger and/or Mark in RENT.
I would also like to see more Mimis actually look freeken Hispanic! That would be nice since that is the only role in the show that actually says that they are a particular race.

Posted: 5/20/06 at 3:27amI'm sorry to point this out, but myself, like millions of Americans have been brought up seeing "The Wizard Of Oz" countless times, just like "Star Wars" or anything legendary. And it turns out that we all have seen a white Glinda. I happen to be very attracted to black people, so I can promise that this is not a case of rasism, it's moreso a case of a predomanatly white audience not knowing why someone they've seen since their early years looking "different". Yeah, it sucks, but it's the truth. (And hey, on the bright side, atleast a black Glinda could marry a white Fiero! Not so much luck for Fiero and Boq...) So calm down, and realize that it's not racism, it's money.

Your mother is mistaken. I was at that performance and I know for a fact that Dioni Michelle Collins was in her regular track. Stacie was also on that night. Kate loprest and Erin Mackey undertstudy Glinda, so one of them would have gone on.
Plus Dioni understudies Madame Morrible.

"I'm not racist so don't call me that"
"I happen to be very attracted to black people so..."
I love these statements. It's like the old "hey, some of my best friends are black (or some other minority).
I don't know enough about any of the posters to claim they are racist. But some of the comments sure SEEM racist. And just by saying "I'm not racist" doesn't make it true. Few people who are racist run around saying "I'm a racist".

I also think the "I'm not racist, really!" lines are funny.
Come on, we can judge for ourselves by the post.
"Black people are great. I'm not racist!" -Clearly not racist
"Black people should stay out of theatre all together. By the way, I have sex with black men." -Just a little racist

I think everyone is overintellectualizing this...

Personally, I think a black G[a]linda would not be so much of a problem - especially for younger teen audiences.
Maybe it is because I grew up in LA, but Glinda seems to me a type, not a color. Wealthy, privileged and totally unaware of others around her. And, though I personally don't like the look, I have seen some blonde black women. Isn't Beyonces hair basically blond right now?
And, actually, it might be interesting to see if the story shifts with it actually being cast colorblind (except for the green of course, kind of have to stick with that).
How about Beyonce As Glinda? (and only partically joking)

I think color-blind casting is a wondreful thing, but it must be done with some forethought. I (a white guy) played Fezziwig in A Christmas Carol, and my wife was also a white lady. Our children were black, white, and Asian. The audience was left with only one conclusion to draw - Mrs. Fezziwig was a whore.

Or, that they were adopted.
No, she was a whore.

Maybe a barren whore?
Seriously, the first thing that came to my mind was that they had adopted the kids. But, that must be my commie-pinko leftist LA upbringing!
You're right, she must have been a whore.

I got bored so here you go JerseyGirl2.
Why the hell are we arguing over a statement made by X x Fiyero x X?
Please remember this is the same person who said that Elphaba "had the nerve" to pretend she was flying.
