In 4 years the country will have a new president. Given Cheney's heart problems do you think he'll stay on as the V.P.? Or will Bush ask him at some point to step aside for a new V.P. someone who the Reps. can run for President?
Thoughts....

I'd just hope no matter his condition they give a full new ticket.
I say, give Cheney two years before resigning for health issues. And then Dubya will pick someone "new" to give him a headstart towards 2008 and undercut any other challengers...
Mom, check out the "a promise is a promise, DGrant" thread from yesterday. I asked papalovesmambo a related Cheney question, and his response was very interesting...and one that I didn't anticipate. See what you think!
Dick Cheyney is Vice President ???? I need to find a picture of him...I don't even know what he looks like.
That is my thought kiss. Hmmm I just wonder who the heck they'll pick. If they wait 2 years they might have a totally different congress. Since the House seats are up every 2 years and 1/3 of the Senate is up every 2 years. Depending on what happens between now and then, a better choice for Bush is to pick one with in 18 months.
But who might he opt for?

You do realise that people bring things to the Supreme Court, they just don't decide things on their own... right?
Thanks Pip I did read that. Not what I expected either. But Giuliani and Pataki are no great surprises as well. I am hoping for a real choice.

Sorry if this sounds a bit silly, but can George W.Bush be President for a third term? I know you can only be President for two consecutive terms, but what about in 8 years? I know it porbably can't and won't happen, but is it technically possible?
Wasn't Roosevelt President for more than two terms?
Oh , and sorry mominator for changing the subject a bit, I just didn't want to start another political-type thread!

Roosevelt was elected for four terms PRIOR to the 22nd Amendment of the Constitution (which was passed shortly after his death)
You CAN run again after a full term has passed. So, for example, Bill Clinton could have run this year.

After FDR's four terms in office (he died shortly into his fourth), the Constitution was amended so that no one can be elected President more than twice, consecutive or non.

If Cheny does retire prior to the end of this term, I wouls expect him to stay on until after January, 2007 (half way pont)
That way the new VP, let's pretend it would be Rudy Giuliani, could take over if something were to happen to Bush and still be able to be re-elected in 2008 and again in 2012.
So that would mean that person could be president for 9 years and 364 days.
This is all in accordance with the 22nd Amendment.

That's incorrect Rodney. Clinton could not have run this year. Once you've been elected twice, that's it for life. The Constitution makes no mention of consecutive or nonconsecutive terms -- after two elected terms, you're done and can't run again.
There was some speculation that he could possibly have run for VP, and had they won and the President stepped down at some point, Clinton could serve as predicent again because he wouldn't have been "elected" to office. According to various legal scholars, though, it couldn't happen -- while the actual text of the constitution would seem to support that interpreation, the underlying notes explicitly forbid it.
"Amendment XXII
Section 1. No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once. But this article shall not apply to any person holding the office of President when this article was proposed by the Congress, and shall not prevent any person who may be holding the office of President, or acting as President, during the term within which this article becomes operative from holding the office of President or acting as President during the remainder of such term."

I stand corrected.
But I'm right about the other stuff.

Thanks!
So George H.Bush (for example) could run again?

Sorry if there was confusion. Your Cheney scenario is correct -- just the Clinton one isn't. Just as LBJ could have sought a second term in '68 if he had chosen to, since he had filled out less than two years of JFK's term and thus had he won in '68 he would have served 9 years in office, whoever takes over for Cheney after the two year mark of the current term would be eligible to run for president for two terms after that.

Yes, Poppa Bush could still run again since he was only elected once.

Yes, George H.W. Bush (aka Bush senior, aka Bush 41) could run again.
There are too many George Bushes.
You know Jeb's Son is named George. But since his is half hispanic, many people refer to him as Jorge. Not to be racist, but to clarify.

Cheney's heart has been better since he got to stop pretending to be human and let out his true, Satanic self.

I'm glad that this is Bush's last time to be elected, unless he passes an amendment to make terms longer. which he just might, since he thinks he can do everything.
