A remake of "Sybil"

I would argue that it's harder for films because we can immediately compare. Usually years go by between revivals.
But I have actually sat through plays and musicals produced regionally months apart and found both fascinating (or not) because of what they brought to the table.
But the comparison works for me--I think you have to treat a script for the stage or screen like it just came in the mail has never been done before. I think that's possibly the most ideal.

beacon, it's "When Rabbit Howls" with Shelley Long--snakes in her hair!
I don't have a prob with remakes either. And I think your comparison is totally kosher, jerb. It's pareve, in fact!

My opinion of remakes of movies is determined on the quality of the remake. I usually get nervous when something I like a previous incarnation of is remade. If it turns out to be crap, I get annoyed with that they've disgrace the name of the original.
I love Yours, Mine and Ours. I hate that now I have to explain that I love the 1968 version with Henry Fonda and Lucille Ball, not that horrible new one with Dennis Quaid and Rene Russo.
I just don't see how anyone can pull off Sybil in today's world without making it completely pathetic.

Posted: 1/18/06 at 3:05pmI'm sure there are plenty of actresses up to the challenge, though I doubt Blanchard is one of them. How about Lois Smith as Sybil's mother? She looks alot like the original actress. ARMAGEDDON!

Just another demonstration of television producers' barren imagination and poverty of ideas, not to mention lack of discernment, taste and appreciation of talent.

Posted: 1/18/06 at 4:12pmWell I certainly agree that it is smarter? to remake good scripts that were bad films. In fact, I think that SHOULD be done! And, I think the parallel is that great musicals that were badly produced should be revived.

Posted: 1/18/06 at 7:24pmHmm...I saw the movie Sybil after reading the book...and of course the performances were amazing, and the movie was pretty good for what it was...and I suppose this has to happen, but I was somewhat disappointed in how different I felt it was from the book. In addition to leaving a lot out obviously, I love the way the book tells the tale...first giving the reader the glimpse of her coming back after another personality took over, to realize what that felt like, and then unfolding the tale in 3 ways, focusing on each at different times: getting to know and start seeing the therapist, the revelation of each personality, and the events of Sybil's life that caused her to dissociate so. I would love it if the movie could tell use that format, also though I'm sure the book wasn't 100% true telling, it seemed truer than the movie, and I felt like I was just watching a much more nonreal version of the story. So if the performances are up to par, and they don't try to make the exact movie that was already made, but at least IMO try to keep it as close to the novel as possible, then I'd be quite excited for it!

They can make one major correction on this new version, they can not say it's "Based on a True Story," since the whole thing was debunked.
(First person to say, "But it's a good story" a la James Frey gets an enema.)

Posted: 1/18/06 at 10:59pmOT: I never saw the movie, "When Rabbit Howls." I did, however, read the book. That was MORE than enough.

Those multiple personality stories are so good.
I love THE THREE FACES OF EVE and SYBIL.
Heck ONE LIFE TO LIVE was always good when the Vicky Lord/Niki Smith story line was going.

Posted: 1/18/06 at 11:03pmHell, I think Vicky/Nicky's daughter Jessica is now a multiple. I think I read that or maybe dreamed it. I don't know.

You know, the whole multiple personality thing has basically fallen apart as a diagnosis.
Having said that, I love Vicky/Niky.

Posted: 1/18/06 at 11:42pmJersey Girl-indeed Jessica is now a looney with multiple syndrome. And pregnant. I don't know which persona is pregnant, though.

Posted: 1/18/06 at 11:46pmHA! Maybe it is twins and each personality can have a child.

Posted: 1/18/06 at 11:47pmJessica's other personality is named Tess or something like that.

A remake of SYBIL?
So someone has located the whereabouts of the poster formerly known as BrendanStryker? I won't repeat anything in the Memorial thread. Why ruin a good wake.
