Why?
Nothing against these two actresses but I thought Joanne Woodward and Sally Field were fabulous in the original.

Oh the smell of desperation at the tv networks. Obviously, a creative idea hasn't surfaced in years.
Nevermind the fact that SALLY FIELD WAS PERFECT IN THE ROLE and it shouldn't be remade.

Wait -- maybe Sally Field can play the doctor, and then it could be that whole Patty Duke/Miracle Worker age-through-the-parts series.
I just hope they devote more time to the screaming cat scene in this version.

oh what a ridiculous statement, goth. By that standard, plays/musicals should only ever be done by ONE cast, and once the run is completed, NEVER AGAIN.......not by a high school, not by a community theater, no-one.
Sorry, I think Jessica would be great in this. And the joy of theater, music, art (yes I know this is television) is seeing different interpretations.
If you don't want to watch it, DON'T.......but let us that want to, do so!

But imagine this story and character in the hands of some of our excellent contempory actresses.
Like revivals, I don't mind remakes. Both can be done brilliantly or poorly. But the original is never tarnished by the attempt.

the correct line is 'You hold your water to the VERY last note!"
and Jerby, you are totally correct, the original never suffers because of a remake.

Cherry Jones. sigh. I'm so in love with her. She can do anything as far I care!

Are people really comparing revivals of plays and musicals to movie remakes?
Cause original productions only live on in the minds of those who actually saw it...whereas film is forever (well...you know).
I mean...don't they show Sybil on one of those women's networks at least 3 times a year?

I will never forget the first time I saw Sally Field huddled on the kitchen floor while Joanne Woodward implored to the heavens:
"WHAT. DID. THOSE. MONSTERS. DOOOOOOOOOOO. TO. YOU?!?"
Wasn't that the 1st-night cliffhanger?

Why do some people see a play like Hamlet over and over in their life? To see THAT actor's Hamlet.
Why do some people keep returning to POTO? To see THAT actor's Phantom.
Why are revivals like Cabaret, Nine, and Sweeney Todd more thrilling than the recent revivals of Bells Are Ringing and Wonderful Town? Because those 3 are reimagined productions to varying degrees. They aren't museum piece productions either.
So, I argue that it CAN work for film. Is Branaugh's Henry V really a remake of Olivier's? And if so, does it matter?
I know you didn't like King Kong, but I though Jackson completely justified retelling that story. And, it was fantastic seeing Naomi Watts bring something completely new to that character.
I even found the not so excellent Psycho remake a titch fascinating.
And the funny thing is--if you don't know it's a remake, you probably wouldn't be so against it. Look at all the remakes of foreign language films that are made. Some work. Some suck.

I'm not really for or against remakes, actually.
I just find the comparison not completely kosher.
