""three or four" had complained about men kissing in public"
Good God! A kiss needs to be reported to the police!?
My bf and I hold hands and kiss each other (not making out) all over NYC (which in most cases wouldn't be an issue, but some areas could be an issue), and only once has it caused any reaction that was noticeable to us: Times Square at night where we encountered many thuggy type kids (of all races when I use the word "thuggy") laughing at us like we were walking through TS in tutus. That's all they could do--laugh. Which, of course, was their own insecurities. No one of that demographic has done anything noticeable when they were on their own. It's that "I don't want my friends to think I think it's cool" group mentality I think.
I've actually expected we might have gotten attitude from people--especially when kids are around (the subway, for example), but everyone has (seemed) to act like it's no big deal--as if we were a straight couple.
And it's sad that anytime we hold hands or kiss in public, we have to feel like we are making a political statement by "flaunting our sexuality". Well, that's why I don't back off. Because, yeah, in a way, it IS a statement. I'm not going to edit myself for other people's ignorance and fear.
I look forward to the special. Hopefully it will expose some things and show the double standard.

I love the language that affronted people use to describe even the most minor public displays of affection.
"I don't care what people do in the privacy of their own homes and I am not homophobic at all, but why do they insist on shoving their sexuality down our throats by holding hands like that?"

Guys, I hate to break it to you but not everyone is going to be accepting of homosexuality. No matter what anyone says or what anyone does. It's a very personal thing. It's a touchy subject and it makes some people uncomfortable.
EDIT: not worded well.
People will accept or they won't.
Sexuality is such a small part of who you are as a person, anyway, so why does it matter. Live your life as you wish to live it; you don't need to force others to share your views. Some people just don't accept it.
Do what you want to do and don't worry about about other people.
EDIT: I am bisexual so don't attack me saying I don't know what I am talking about..
Just do what you want to do..Who cares what other people think..There are people that will never accept it...that's their problem...

But what is shoving it down somebody else's throats, darling? Holding hands in public? A peck on the cheek?
I personally don't give a damn if I make some yahoo tourist from Nebraska uncomfortable. They made me uncomfortable for the first 20 years of my life.

I didn't word that well, Calvin..sorry...Certainly, everyone should be able to show their affection to their loved ones at any time, anywhere. No matter what.
But, it still doesn't change the fact that there will always be some people who will remain unchanged and unaccepting. I don't think that makes them "ignorant." They don't agree and they don't have to. It's their opinion.
But it shouldn't change who we are and how we carry ourselves and live our lives. Who cares what pother people think? I don't.
A few years ago, I did a show with this guy and he was very effeminant and overtly sexual. No matter what he did, said, etc ..he associated with sex.
He was really graphic and disgusting. I asked him one day, "Does everything have to be based on sex with you?"
And he said, "as a gay man in America, my sexuality is all I got."
That stuck with me and it's bull****. I can tell you, many of my gay friends do go out of their way to make people uncomfortable. They thrive on it. That is a terrible way to try to gain support and only lends itself to the negative and stereotyped .

Exactly. I don't give a **** if they were to scowl or be disgusted. Or even those kids laughing. And now that I think about it, I think some people may have stared at us with a stern look--but I always look away and ignore them.
I care when it's something someone might DO to me or my bf. And sadly, NYC has proven it isn't safe from gay bashing--no where is safe from that.
But we DO need to educate our society if we are ever going to progress to full equal rights. People DO need to change if they are ever going to walk into a voting booth and support us. Or allow the judicial system (and activist judges) to progress our civil rights as they should. Etc.

You think that's all there is to it? Well, gosh! I guess I can legally marry my boyfriend and he can get a Green Card and get a job and we can finally live together in the same country! Oh wait...no we can't. It's not just their problem. Especially when "doing what you want to do" could get you severely beaten and/or murdered in most states.
Good grief...

How do they go out of their way to make people uncomfortable? By not being butch enough? By not speaking in code? My experience has shown me that many a straight person goes out their way to feel uncomfortable.
Unless someone is f*cking another guy in public, I don't see the difference between displays of sexuality by either orientation.

Wow. See, some of us imagine it every time we show affection in public.

Oh, Christ. Who is attacking? You're the one saying ridiculous things with no basis for backing them up.
Out of curiosity, in your bisexuality, what percentage of public affection having you shown that was homosexual as opposed to that you have shown was heterosexual? Are you in a relationship now? With someone of your own or opposite gender? When you're orientation comes up, to you refer to yourself as bi or gay?

Sounds like you have wonderful "friends". There's nothing so admirable as those who go out of their way to offend others.

So, you agree with 2373 that we should be accommodating to anti-gay majority and keep our blatant displays of affection to ourselves if we know what's good for us?
