Naomi Cambell on UGLY BETTY:

Naomi Campbell lands Ugly Betty role

Supermodel Naomi Campbell is set to star in Ugly Betty as a “loony” fashionista.

The role in the double Golden Globe winning show will mark the feisty star’s television acting debut.

"On Ugly Betty I'll play a loony who loves to shop and can't find a man. I like that sort of role," Campbell has revealed.

Earlier this week, Ugly Betty scooped the Golden Globes for Best Television Series (Musical/Drama) and Best Performance by an Actress In a Television Series (Musical/Drama) for America Ferrera, who plays the title character.

Naomi recently pleaded guilty to assaulting her housekeeper with a mobile phone and was told to serve five days community service as punishment.

{America and the gang better keep her away from cell phones and anything else heavy that can be thrown and cause damage.}

The title maybe typical.
But the show has a great message.
And America and the rest of the cast makes it a hit
And worth watching.

Let me guess. The message is: take a pretty actress and put glasses on her (AKA Make Her Ugly) and make TV viewers fall in love with her DESPITE the fact that she's ugly. Because we all know, if someone is ugly, we hate them by DEFAULT unless given a reason to be proven otherwise.

Ahh, I'm so touched. What a fantastic message!

We live in a world where the models and images we see are STICK FIGURE THIN. Its sickening. And FINALLY we have someone on televison of FULL FIGURE. She's not a freaking STICK FIGURE: She has curves and she's despite people constantly putting her down, continues to flourish and thrive.

I think thats a great message.
I'm not a skinny kid, so its nice to see people on television who aren't Nicole Richie or Mary Kate Olsen stick figure thin.
And obviously based on the ratings and her Golden Globe win, people agree.

OK. So she's curvy and not STICK FIGURE THIN and as a result she's labeled UGLY by the show's creators?

THAT is sickening.

Yes, but slowly but surely, had you paid attention, she's changing the view of "ugly". She's teaching the shallow people of MODE that beauty is from within not just on the outside. She's a better role model than have the teeny pop stars out there today and I'm sorry, but I'd much rather see a show about a smart, intellgent women teaching the world a lesson on beauty than another reality show about people in a house.

P.S. ClumsyDude:

We live in a world where the models and images we see are STICK FIGURE THIN. Its sickening.

You CHOOSE to live in the world you describe. I most certainly do not live in such a world. I focus my time, my love, and my energy toward real life people that I know and talk to and appreciate. These people are of all shapes and sizes, with different levels of conformity to the images you describe. Get out from behind your television set and meet some real live people. Talk to them, let them get to know you, and you get to know them. THIS is real life and it is QUITE beautiful if you turn off the TV and make your own world for YOU. As a result, YOU, a real person, will continue to flourish and thrive more and more each day.

Oh please.
I have a life beyond the televison.
I'm just saying the show has a great message.
No need to get personal and rip into me.
All I did was state my opinon and how I felt.
You had to go ahead and make it PERSONAL.
However, I won't lower myself to you're level.
Because I have absloutely nothing to prove to you or anyone.
But myself.

Clumsy, you're absolutely misreading what I'm saying. I did not "rip" into you. It's quite the opposite. I'm just saying that the best way for all of us to embrace people from all different backgrounds and most importantly ourselves is to not take television so seriously and focus that energy toward real people and away from popular media that tells us what is "UGLY" and what is not.

And I do interact with REAL people
And I do TALK to REAL PEOPLE.
And they are fantastic.
I just throughly enjoy UGLY BETTY for its message.
I also think due to the fact I was bored, I got way too into it.
I'm very sorry. I didn't mean to make a mountain out of a molehill.
I think I truly went over the edge and you showed me that.
Thank you, Foster.

Foster, I think its ironic and funny that someone whose av is {title of show} is show is so hung up about the title of show.

If you don't like Ugly Betty, don't watch Ugly Betty.

I thought the show was titled "Ugly Betty" because it's painfully ironic. Betty is not ugly, she's as cute as a button. However, in the world that she works in, one where everyone is concerned with wearing the latest fashions, having the most modern hair styles, and being nothing more than a size two or zero, Betty is considered ugly. Unfortunately, not all, but most television shows today depict "beautiful" female characters who are at the most a size 6, and that may be pushing it. Most of the female characters that Betty works with at Mode look like the typical actresses you would find on television today (i.e. Amanda). However, Betty is different. She doesn't wear Gucci or, taking one step further, doesn't shop at American Eagle. She's a curvy girl who isn't going crazy dieting and bemoaning her existence. I think she's a great role model to young girls.

I think the title of the show reflects what Betty's co-workers may think of her, but the fun for the audience is knowing that she isn't ugly. The great part of the show is also watching Betty's co-workers realize this also. For example, this past episode with Daniel. He treated her a heck of a lot differently than he did in the pilot. I find it interesting to watch some of these people who are so concerned with outward appearance start to see that Betty really is beautiful, even if she's not beautiful according to their usual standards.

So why even bother watching television? I don't get this mindset that babies come out of their mothers' wombs holding a remote control. Is there really no other option for people who live in the suburbs than to watch television?

Most of the female characters that Betty works with at Mode look like the typical actresses you would find on television today (i.e. Amanda).

But they're not like typical women you'll find in the real world. Why invest time and (gasp) thought into this garbage when you could just as easily be interacting with real human beings, outside of your house?

She's a curvy girl who isn't going crazy dieting and bemoaning her existence. I think she's a great role model to young girls.

There are millions of women in this country that are great role models for young girls. Real, living, breathing, thinking women. Television is about making money, not making fake "role models". Seriously, don't deceive yourself nor insult young girls who are looking for role models to build their self image. This garbage does nothing but damage.

I don't know, but it seems that the fact that the title is a near-direct translation from the extremely successful Colombian telenovela from 8 years ago("Yo soy Betty, la fea") has been overlooked. I love the show, and I'm not denying the problems with the message in our current pop culture (though I don't necessarily agree), this is not a problem solely about our society, though it is applicable.

"So why even bother watching television? I don't get this mindset that babies come out of their mothers' wombs holding a remote control. Is there really no other option for people who live in the suburbs than to watch television?"

You're right. If people don't like what they see on television they can just not watch it. No one is arguing that. People watch television for all kinds of reasons: to be informed, to have something to do when they're bored, and most commonly to be entertained. The most entertaining shows on television, especially for young people, are populated with female characters that are skinny and getting skinnier as the show goes on. It's nice to see a show where the most arguably beautiful character on the show is a girl who isn't a stick figure.

"But they're not like typical women you'll find in the real world. Why invest time and (gasp) thought into this garbage when you could just as easily be interacting with real human beings, outside of your house?"

People watch "this garbage" to be entertained. People watch television to escape the real world and their realities for an hour or two. Television shows exist in a universe where everyone is thin and beautiful. It's great that for once this universe is celebrating a beautiful character that isn't necessarily defined by traditional notions of beauty according to the world of television.

"There are millions of women in this country that are great role models for young girls. Real, living, breathing, thinking women. Television is about making money, not making fake "role models". Seriously, don't deceive yourself nor insult young girls who are looking for role models to build their self image. This garbage does nothing but damage."

It would be amazing if most of the female youth in America were looking to Oprah Winfrey, Condoleeza Rice, and Madeleine Albright for role models. However, most of the young girls in America don't even know who Condoleeza Rice of Madeleine Albright are. The young female generation of America isn't looking to celebrated women in reality as role models, they're looking to television characters for role modes. They may not be purposefully looking for role models to build their self image, but it happens. If a girl is watching The O.C. or One Tree Hill and sees that all the skinny girls are being treated like princesses and curvy girls don't even appear on the screen, do you really think that that girl wouldn't subconciously try to model her appearance after them? But if a girl is watching a television show where a girl who isn't a size 2 is the star of the show, don't you think that that may make the girl feel better about herself and maybe see that she doesn't have to be a size 2 to be beautiful? You're right; television is about making money, not providing great role models. But it's nice that this one time a show was able to make money and provide a good role model for girls.
