She was outstanding, movie was very enjoyable, a little trouble with the script but enjoyable. Benning is a little Norma Desmond, a little Joan Crawford (cold cream), and a smidge of American Beauty's Caroline ( the role she should have nabbed the Oscar for), however , in AB, we saw her raw emotion, in BJ(don't laugh), she is magnanimous and the epitome of actress. She is celebrated, betrayed, just an incredible performance all around.
After renting "Being Julia" I think Annette Bening deserved to win the Academy Award. She knocks your socks off. I loved the movie as well.
I really enjoyed this film. It's certainly not perfect, but Bening is really beyond fantastic. I don't agree that she should have won the award for AMERICAN BEAUTY - anyone that's seen Hilary Swank's performance in BOYS DON'T CRY will probably agree with me - she was beyond brilliant. This year, I don't think Bening deserved the award MORE than Swank, but I felt that Swank, Staunton, Bening, and Winslet were all equally deserving.

How disappointing. I thought this thread was about Annette Funicello.
I can't wait to rent this one..it's been on my list for months now. Always been a big fan of hers and thought she'd chew the scenery in this one!
We've been over this a couple times already, but what the hell...
I saw it six times.
I've 'so' already started a thread on this, but it was my favorite movie last year. I now own the DVD and have watched it twice since purchase. It's phenominal. I want Julia to be my friend.
I definitely think that Annette deserved the Oscar. Heck, even if she didn't, she should've gotten it. The Oscars are rarely about who really deserves it anymore... She totally understood this character, and brought across every nuance beautifully.
Watching it for the first time and loving it.
Adore her in that role.

Boy, I'm in the minority. The movie was lousy. Bening was hit or miss. Her accent came and went, and she never convinced me that she was this woman. I saw an actress playing at a role rather than inhabiting it--she pushed too hard for effect in most of her scenes. Her best moment comes at the end when the character is alone in the restaurant. IT's probably her best moment because she doesn't have to say anything. When she's required by the script to hit the more emotional notes, she fails. I would not have nominated her.
I can't imagine Bening being too happy about being beat twice by the same actress for the Oscar.
She was fab and the film was great entertainment.
Anyone looking forward to more of Annette in MRS. HARRIS coming to HBO in Feb?
"I can't imagine Bening being too happy about being beat twice by the same actress for the Oscar."
But...it's Hilary Swank. You can't expect to beat THAT.
For MILLION DOLLAR BABY you can. I think her performance in that film is overrated (as well as any "acting" from Clint Eastwood).
I thought Swank was a revelation in BOYS DON'T CRY, but after the MIRACLE WORKER debacle, I'm skeptical of how versatile an actress Swank is.
I think Swank is brilliant in both films, though her role in Boys Don't Cry was certainly more daring to take on. So of course it will receive higher praise.
I'm still a bit foggy on what exactly happened with The Miracle Worker...

Slightly off-topic, but...
I still think Winslet completely deserved that Oscar. Her performance as Clemintine is my favourite of any screen performance, period. I can watch her over and over again and get different things from her character every time.
I agree, MarkCohen. Winslet brought many layers to Clementine. Everytime I watch it, I notice something new. Yet another reason why, IMHO, Swank didn't deserve the Oscar.
i enjoyed BEING JULIA as an entertainment, but i thought AB never found the balance between artifice and actually being artificial. i bet she will be a smash in that augusten burroughs story being brought to the screen. and word on kate winslet -- she was great in that role, as she always is for me.
