Lincoln WAS a Republican, but in 1864 the "National Union" Party was formed. It was comprised of Republicans AND Democrats who supported Lincoln's policies--continue the Civil War.
The Democrat who ran for President was George McClellan--who wanted to END the War and let the South go "in peace".
To create a balanced ticket, the National Union party nominated Lincoln--a Republican and Johnson--a Democrat.
Therefore, when Lincoln was Assassinated, he was succeeded by a Democrat--who faced a VERY hostile Republican Cabinet and Congress.

"succeeded by hostile republicans"

Which is one of the reasons they tried to impeach him...
They didn't like him.
McClellan was a Civil War general, right? Didn't he get replaced or something?

Jwei, you are CORRECT on both counts. Johnson had to contend with RADICAL Republicans--like his own Secretary of the Treasury, Edwin M. Stanton.
And YES, McClellan was one of the MANY Generals Lincoln fired until he found Ulysses S. Grant.
It doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out why McClellan suddenly became a "pacifist".
What former First Lady later served as the U.S. Delegate to the United Nations?

Why did Richard M. Nixon have to deliver the "Checkers" Speech?
#85re: AP American History
Posted: 5/2/05 at 8:10pmWow, that sounds *vaguely* familiar, but we DEFINITELY didn't study that!

Hmm I know he was VP at the time, and Checkers was his dog...
Was it because he had been accused of using money from his campaign fund for his own reasons?

M_E a random question for you when you get the time to respond... (or to anyone else who wants to see if they can answer it for review!)
Why did Henry Clay and Andrew Jackson have a political rivalry? Did it happen because Jackson denounced Clay's American System? Or was Clay, like Calhoun, against Jackon's actions with tariffs that favored the west and northeast?

VERY Close, CYP.
"Checkers" was a gift from a private corporation, and Nixon was declared of being "on the take." GOP Leaders wanted Eisenhower to dump Nixon as his running mate.
Nixon said "Please give me a chance." He went on National TV and cleared himself. He made the famous statement "Pat may not wear a Mink Coat. But she wears a Republican cloth one."
After that, Eisenhower threw his arms around Nixon and said, "You're My Boy."
Which President enacted the Civil Service Act, and why was that so ironic?

*Wild guess here* LBJ? Not sure why it was ironic...
Wait. No, it wasn't LBJ. I don't think. GAH I KNOW NOTHING!!!

Elphie you might be thinking of the Civil Rights Act of 1964...
Civil Service Act was in 1883.. signed by Arthur.. not sure why it is ironic.. ahh!

Please RELAX, Elphie. It'll be OK.
The Civil Service Act was passed under the direction of President Chester Alan Arthur.
What was so ironic about it is that when he was Governor of New York, he was CONSTANTLY taking bribes from people who wanted positions in government.
John Garner was FDR's running mate for two elections and served as Vice President from 1933 to 1941. Why didn't he run with FDR in the 1940 Election?
#97re: AP American History
Posted: 5/2/05 at 8:21pmWait, that doesn't have anything to do with the Pendleton Act of 1883(?), the one about Civil Service Reform, does it?
