re: Academy Nominations being announced

"You need the Academy to validate your own interests?"

No, I'm saying that I don't need them to validate my interests. The films that don't win the Oscars are the ones that end up getting screened in college level courses taught by the smart people of the world (read: not Academy members) anyway. :)

"Gangs Of New York? Seriously? That was the longest 3 hours of my life and I was not sorry to see it snubbed at awards time. Far From Heaven, on the other hand....."

I prefer Far From Heaven over Gangs of New York, but I really admire the latter anyway. I thought Daniel Day-Lewis, Cameron Diaz and Liam Neeson gave great performances (DiCaprio less so but he still had his spellminding moments). I also found the subject matter deeply interesting and now own several books concerning it.

re: Academy Nominations being announced

Interesting that you single out DiCaprio as being the weakest of the 3 when Cameron Diaz was laughably bad in Gangs.

What was so bad about her?

I still enjoyed DiCaprio's performance but ultimately, his failure to maintain a consistent accent was his downfall.

I'm glad to see him nominated for The Aviator. Wish he were sharing the category with Paul Giamatti. Also wish that the spineless Academy hadn't given Jamie Foxx the predictable but terribly undeserved supporting actor nomination. In retrospect, I wouldn't have even listed him in my top five for one nomination.

And now Chris Rock is planning to raise hell on the stage if Foxx doesn't win Best Lead Actor? Mmkay. I appreciate the admission that the Oscars are more about pressure than merit.

re: Academy Nominations being announced

Some interesting omissions...

Although the Aviator received a total of 11 nominations, Howard Shore was not nominated for Best Score for which he won a Golden Globe. (But the score for LEMONY SNICKET gets a nomination???)

From Alfie: "Old Habits Die Hard" by Mick Jagger was not nominated for Best Song, for which it won a Golden Globe.

No Director nomination for Marc Forster for FINDING NEVERLAND, although it was nominated for Best Picture. (There's always one.)

And PHANTOM should be grateful for the three nominations it received for Art Direction, Cinematography, and Song. IMO it didn't deserve any.

As it was Diaz's. She couldn't maintain her accent worth a damn. And she can't act period, so at least DiCaprio had that on her.

re: Academy Nominations being announced

Aviator's score was deemed ineligible as it didn't have enough new material in it.

re: Academy Nominations being announced

I'm a touch disappointed to see 'Finding Neverland' nominated. I found it slight and predictable, a triumph of sentiment over real emotion.

re: Academy Nominations being announced

How aggravating. It's a wonder that I stay up for these things knowing there's not a chance in hell that I'll be satisfied.

Oh well. I guess now I'm obligated to screen Kinsey for my undergrads.

Are these the most ridiculous nominations since... last year?

John, I didn't like Finding Neverland either. But I disliked Ray more.

Not enough new material? Really??? Huh. re: Academy Nominations being announced

re: Academy Nominations being announced

I wouldn't have nominated 'Ray' either, although I think Foxx deserves every award he gets.

I didn't dislike 'Finding Neverland' I just didn't think it was nearly as good as its getting credit for. I think a lot of the movie's attention is coming from Hollywood's new found infatuation with Johnny Depp.

These aren't nearly as frustrating as last year's. Last year we had 'Sea Bisquit.'

re: Academy Nominations being announced

Oh Seabiscuit, talk about a painful viewing experience. I feel the same way about Ray that I did about Seabiscuit.

You really think that Foxx is deserving of every award he gets? So the other actors deserve... nothing? Some voting body should go against the grain. We can't all hide behind sunglasses and imitate someone's effeminate voice almost mockingly.

re: Academy Nominations being announced

That wasn't all there was to Foxx's performance though and to say as much is actually insulting. It's like saying Charlize Theron didn't deserve it either because we can all gain weight and wear prosthetics.

re: Academy Nominations being announced

I didn't get that from Foxx's performance at all. I thought he was dead on, using the necessary impressionistic traits to build the character. I don't think the movie was nearly as successful as the performance.

I don't think annual awards need to be fair, balanced or give everyone a piece of the pie. That doesn't mean you have to agree with the voters but I don't see how it needs to be balanced or spread out. In that case why not just do nominations and leave it at that?

re: Academy Nominations being announced

My only major disappointment with these nominations is the GLARING omission in the Best Animated Film- "Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence." Incredible movie, gripping and interesting storyline, gorgeous combination of tradition animation with computer work.

And yet...it's all Pixar and Dreamworks. *sighs*

Well, I didn't exactly mean to compliment him. :) I just think he mastered the art of imitation some years ago, and it's silly that he's just now being recognized for that. I have no apologies about my revised opinion of Foxx's performance. He should be sharing some of those trophies with other actors! It must be insulting to them to be nominated and then have Chris Rock (among others) say that there will be genocide if Foxx doesn't win every time.

re: Academy Nominations being announced

And yet you think Cameron Diaz is good in Gangs Of New York. Foxx's performance is so much more than an impersonation and for you to be so flip and dismissive of it is really quite telling.

re: Academy Nominations being announced

Hey, why does it really matter what I think about each person's performance? I'm entitled to my own opinion and liking Diaz's performance over Foxx's tells you nothing about me. :) So don't start.

re: Academy Nominations being announced

I'm with you there, Evelyn. Why on earth Sarsgaard was snubbed for a barely mediocre Foxx is absolutely ridiculous.

re: Academy Nominations being announced

I'm upset about the omission of Sky Captain from Art Direction. It was far superior to Phantom and the film was visually stunning. And Alan Alda for The Aviator??? It was a small, nearly forgettable role. Clive Owen has it in the bag, but c'mon! I'm just sad that yet another safe yet forgettable film will probably win this year.

I thought 'Sky Captain' looked terrible. I don't ever want to see that much beige/olive green again in a movie for the rest of my life.

LOL! Okay I'll be back in a few and will certainly contribute to Munk's new thread about who should/will win.

Now popcultureboy, don't slam me anymore for thinking that Foxx's performance in Ray shouldn't win the Oscar. I think we agree too much on other points for you to start hating me over this one difference of opinion. re: Academy Nominations being announced

re: Academy Nominations being announced

While I think Jamie Foxx deserves the nomination, his performance in RAY was far from masterful. It was an above average interpretation in a SHOWTIME quality bio-pic.

re: Academy Nominations being announced

I agree - I thought SKY CAPTAIN was absolutely terrible in every respect.

And yes, Alan Alda, what the hell? Peter Sarsgaard for KINSEY and Freedy Highmore for NEVERLAND were both far more deserving for a nomination than Alda. However, I think that Alda deserves the nomination FAR MORE than Jamie Foxx. And I don't agree - Clive Owen doesn't have it in the bag at all.

I was shocked at Clint Eastwood's nomination for Best Actor...I wouldn't go as far to say undeserving, but I would have easily nominated Paul Giamatti, Liam Neeson, or Javier Bardem before I even considered Eastwood. His acting in that performance was one of the only lacking parts of that movie.

re: Academy Nominations being announced

I just watched Sky Captain again the other day and I'm really amazed that anyone thought EVERYTHING about the film was terrible. I thought the artistry of design and style of it were fantastic. I did not like the performances of Paltrow and Law, but I still marvel at how closely it mimics films of the late 30s (especially the tongue-in-cheek nods to classics like Lost Horizon), and the evolution of the style and technology throughout the film.
