re: Academy Nominations being announced

BAH!

I literally just got off the phone with my mother, and she sent me an express package of Cinnamon chip, blueberry, and white-chocolate raspberry scones that she made!

I love scones!

re: Academy Nominations being announced

For Best Picture nominations, I'm going with...

The Aviator
Finding Neverland
Hotel Rwanda
Million Dollar Baby
Sideways

re: Academy Nominations being announced

Glad you enjoyed it Beav. I haven't seen it yet, but I've heard good things. I have to get my lazy a** out of this snowbound apt. and try to see it this week.

Which film would you like to see win Best Picture?

re: Academy Nominations being announced

I know this question wasn't directed at me, but I'd like Million Dollar Baby to win. Am I the only one who found Finding Neverland to be really overrated?

No Tiff. I agree completely. I thought it was a sweet movie, but not one of the five best of the year. The only reason I think it will get nominated, beside it being popular, is that Miramax (aka Harvey Weinstein and his money) is behind it.

re: Academy Nominations being announced

Any predictions on Don Cheadle being nominated? He's such an underrated actor. I hope he's the upset tomorrow.

I'd be very surprised if Cheadle doesn't get nominated. He so deserves it! And if by some chance Neverland doesn't get nominated, I'd like to see Kinsey get the nomination. Or even Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind.

re: Academy Nominations being announced

I kind of agree with Tiff: Finding Neverland wasn't my favorite. I felt it kind of drrrraaaaaaggggggggeeeeddddddddd. However, I did cry the entire time. Very emotional.

re: Academy Nominations being announced

Did you cry, you weenie? re: Academy Nominations being announced It's okay. I got a bit teary when the orphans were watching the play, but that's pretty much it. I found it to be too soppy and manipulative, although the acting was great. Still, I seem to be the minority opinion here.

Did anyone see The Woodsman? I haven't gotten the chance to see it yet, but I think Kevin Bacon is also a really underrated actor and I hope this is his credibility-making role!

I thought "Finding Neverland" as a whole was overrated, but the performances were amazing.

What time is the announcement?

5:37am PST, I believe. (I wake up every year to watch them live, yet I'm in such a groggy state that I don't remember exactly what time it's at.)

re: Academy Nominations being announced

Well as everyone knows, I'm extremely partial to Kinsey. Sadly, most journalists agree that it doesn't have much of a shot at a Best Picture nomination. What's great is that quite a few also seem to wish it would get one. Could it be the upset based on a quiet but significant fan base? We shall see.

Of the most likely nominees, I hope that The Aviator takes Best Picture home. I liked Million Dollar Baby but it isn't as "uniquely beautiful" as people claim. It traffics in cliches and works for that reason.

Sideways is entertaining but inconsequential. Alexander Payne should be happy that his film has received all of the awards it did. Virginia Madsen is a sweatheart who simply should be sharing some of the wealth with Cate Blanchett and Laura Linney.

re: Academy Nominations being announced

LOL don't get me wrong - Sideways is my #3 film of 2004 and one that's guaranteed to make it into my DVD collection, perhaps more because I think Thomas Haden Church is just so hot with his shirt off than because I expect to watch it monthly. But the reality is that it's "Road Trip" for adults. Is Sideways is a film that people will see twenty-five years from now and understand why it won a Best Picture Oscar? I doubt it. It hardly has a shot at a double-digit total of nominations - which Kinsey could have easily had if Fox Searchlight hadn't given it raw treatment in favor of Sideways.

re: Academy Nominations being announced

Yep, a big reason why Kinsey hasn't won any awards in a while is that Fox Searchlight "realized" that Sideways would be the more popular film and went crazy with the Sideways FYC ads.

Paul Giamatti gave the best performance in Sideways, IMO. It's a pity that there's still talk of him not getting a nomination while Church and Madsen are frontrunners in their respective categories.

Sister, I can direct you to where you will easily be in the majority.

I'll give my vote for RAY since noone has even mentioned it here. It's also the only one with any oscar buzz about it that I've been able to see *shame*

Every year I ask my mom to let me stay home the day the nominations are announced, and every year she refuses.
I don't see how this year could be any different. re: Academy Nominations being announced

re: Academy Nominations being announced

I will go out on a MAJOR limb and predict that Peter Sarsgaard will finally get a nomination as Best Supporting Actor for Kinsey. I cannot believe he was overlooked for "Broken Glass." But I just have a feeling he'll get the nod.

Nothing precious, plain to see, don't make a fuss over me. Not loud, not soft, but somewhere inbetween. Say sorry, just let it be the word you mean.
